'We’re going to have another baby,’' her mother’s words echoed and circled around her young mind. Obviously Ameyuki hadn’t reacted accordingly because after a few moments of silence Mizuki followed with 'Are you happy?' Honestly, no she wasn’t happy. But she couldn’t disappoint her mother so she numbly responded with, "I am happy that you are happy." That bit was at least true. She wanted her parents to live a life of love and happiness. After excusing herself from her mother’s presence the painted filly found herself aimlessly walking across the pebbled beach. Gently kicking rocks with her front hooves while she processed her feelings.
Ameyuki knew that her mother was going to have more children. And Mizuki was a great mother. But where did that leave her? Now that she was no longer her mother’s baby, what place did she now have? Obviously she could no longer spend every day stuck to her mother’s hip. She would have to start being more independent. That idea scared her. She didn’t feel ready to be by herself even though she would be turning two years old next spring. At that age she could go and live with another herd. But she doesn’t feel like she’s ready to leave. And father had promised that she didn't have to leave if she didn't want to. A snort escapes her nose. Too afraid to leave and unsure of where she stood if she stayed. She turns her eyes towards the rolling waves and stares at the crossing isle in the distance. Perhaps she should go there for some answers? But she was too afraid to go by herself and she didn’t want to burden anyone by asking them to accompany her.
