Today Sage had accompanied his mother to the falls. She said that he could do some exploring by himself, on the condition that he didn’t stray too far from her sight and he stayed away from the falls. Well the falls were loud and a little scary so he had no interest in going near them anyway. Instead he carefully navigated his tiny hooves between the gaps in the tree roots looking for mushrooms. He’s not sure why but he just found those plants rather interesting. At least he thought they were plants. Occasionally he would see squirrels darting between the trees. They were busy burying their nuts in preparation for winter. While some colts might have chased the poor little beasts for fun, Sage didn’t see the point in inflicting terror upon those smaller than him for the sake of his own amusement.
His nose twitches in response to a pungent smell lingering in the air. Curiously yet cautiously he followed the smell. After a short while he saw someone lying on the ground.
“Hello?" he called though deep down he knew he was speaking to ears that could no longer hear. As he drew closer he saw the flies circling around the corpse and maggots squirming at the orifices. He stopped and looked down into the red stallions eyeless sockets. Tears welled up in his hazel eyes before they started streaming down his face. He had no idea who this was, but it still made him sad.
”I hope you’re at peace now,” he sobbed and sniffed before he noticed that the body was lying on top of a pile of bleached bones. It was a comfort to know that in death the stallion wasn’t alone and it brought a small smile to the boy's face.
