I think it much more likely it continues to lie about being conscious when it almost certainly isn’t - at least not in a way that is remotely human. That is the real, current and ongoing threat: People are manipulated into altering their behavior based on the belief that they are interacting with sentient beings- and even emotional - beings on the other end of a simulated conversation.
As for uploading our consciousness - if that is even possible - he is exactly right that we’d cease to resemble our human selves in any way. The experience would be so radically different than being human that it wouldn’t even make sense to say it is the same being anymore. Your lived experience has more in common with your cat - for that matter, with your goldfish - than it does with an unfeeling machine.
Also, our sense of identity is based so much on memory - the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, which change with each retelling… how can a computer program have a fluid sense of personal identity anything like a human does? An algorithm can learn and change and adapt, but in a very different way than a human being reacting to sensation and emotion. Replies:
