Ok Robert your excused boots!
here`s the storey
Hedgehoppers Anonymous were serving personnel in the Royal Air Force (RAF) when they recorded the track.
The lead singer was Mick Tinsley, who was a serving airman based at RAF Wittering near Peterborough. He and three other bandmates were ground crew (engineers and technicians) responsible for servicing the V bombers (the Vulcans, Victors, and Valiants) that were part of Britain's nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.
The Serving Members:
Mick Tinsley (Lead Vocals): RAF Ground Crew.
John Stewart (Lead Guitar): RAF Ground Crew.
Ray Honeyball (Bass): RAF Ground Crew.
Leslie Dash (Drums): RAF Ground Crew.
Alan Laud (Rhythm Guitar): The only civilian in the original lineup; he lived near the base and joined the group after meeting them at a local pub.
A Few Fun Facts:
Permission to Play: Because they were active-duty military, they had to seek special permission from the RAF to perform and tour. When the song became a massive hit, it actually caused a bit of a "headache" for the military authorities because the band suddenly needed to be on Top of the Pops and go on tour while they were still under contract to the Air Force.
The Name: The term "Hedgehoppers" was a direct reference to their day jobs. It was RAF slang for the V-bomber pilots who practiced "hedge-hopping"—flying at extremely low altitudes to stay under enemy radar.
Session Help: While the RAF boys performed on the track, the recording session was famously bolstered by a young session guitarist named Jimmy Page (who later founded Led Zeppelin).
