I had thought it was fairly clear that the world's two best pelotaris at this moment in time are Aritz and Johan. But after watching Urreisti perform of late, I need to seriously revise that opinion. This kid is just tremendous and performing at the highest level in the sport.
Urreisti dominated and won the Cesta All Star tournament tonight with the ever dependable Basque by displaying a level of aggression and confidence that is currently unmatched. He virtually never fails to kill the point from both sides when given the opportunity, and many of those opportunities are created proactively by Urreisti himself.
Scary to think that this kid is just 21 years old and presumably destined to get even better than this going forward. The future of the sport is in very good hands.
Trying to think of the past greats he most reminds me of. Michelena perhaps?
Incidentally, Oyhenard was very good again today in a second place effort. He seems like the best athlete of any of the back courters and has a high ceiling.
Hey Jai Alai League: where the heck is Txanika? I'm telling you that this guy is better that many of your regulars, but he doesn't seem to be getting the same opportunities as other lesser newcomers and regulars. For example, he would blow away someone like Bixente.
