I think that more priests called him Splinterdick behind his back than students did. He was goofy doofus who had an affair with the male art teacher - rumor was that they had a cheap apartment together instead of using seedy motels. It's definitely plausible.
(Mach was a smarmy prick but at least his teams were great.)
