By 3:00 PM on D-Day (June 6, 1944), the chaotic initial beach landings were largely over, and the Allies were aggressively expanding their footholds while German command finally attempted—and failed—to coordinate major counterattacks. The situation varied significantly depending on the sectormaha Beach: The morning slaughter had subsided, and American troops had managed to push off the blood-stained sands and scale the bluffs. By 3:00 PM, Allied destroyers had moved dangerously close to the shore to provide direct artillery support, and engineers were actively clearing paths through the mine-strewn obstacles.Juno Beach: Canadian forces had successfully pushed the Germans back, neutralizing heavy coastal fortifications and securing their designated beachhead by the mid-afternoon.Gold and Sword Beaches: British forces had linked up with airborne units. Pushing inland, they cleared fortified coastal towns in fierce house-to-house fighting and advanced to within striking distance of the strategically vital city of Caen.Utah Beach: Troops moved inland and successfully established contact with paratroopers who had dropped behind enemy lines earlier that morning to secure causeways across flooded terrain. The German Responsen the German side, the afternoon of June 6 was defined by massive confusion and a critical delay. Allied airborne drops and heavy radio disruption had caused high command to believe the invasion was merely a diversion. It was not until 3:00 PM that Hitler finally authorized the release of armored reserve divisions to counterattack—but by then, it was too late to dislodge the Allied forces from the beaches.
