Salem slumbers, and Mazikeen waits. The preternatural stillness that has settled across the island does not faze the speckled mare. If anything, it excites her more. Everyone knows about the calm before the storm, the stillness of the air before the lightning strikes, the silence before the predator pounces. The signs are all there: something big is coming. Mazikeen waits with bated breath to see just what the island has in store for them.
But until the time comes, she keeps herself distracted. Her days are filled with tasks: endless patrols, trips to the watering hole, and, of course, keeping up with her daughter's demands.
Mazikeen has always felt some semblance of pride when she looks upon her children. How can she not? They are an extension of her, a piece of her essence. They are seeds, sown with abandon and thriving against the odds that the universe has stacked against them since before they were ever born. But there is something different about Voodoo. Something in her that Mazikeen knows is reflected in her own eyes. She is still so young, but already Mazikeen's mind has begun formulating plans of what her future will look like.
Starting, ideally, with the most immediate concern: introducing her to her father. But as she has been for weeks, Mazikeen kicks the thought away, imagining it rolling like tumbleweed down the nearest sand dune. Instead she opts to head inland towards the watering hole - perhaps she will stumble upon Kohelet or Solzeren on the way, and have herself a nice little family chat.
