In truth, rest was no longer what Rook coveted. Instead, she wished for a moment alone with her brother - for a chance to voice the doubts that still crept through her thoughts. But as soon as Lucifer assured them he would stand watch, the oak-brown mare knew he had no intention of giving them the chance to forfeit his “kindness.” So when his gaze wandered across the field, she slipped close to Jester, whispering into his ear.
The stallion met her urgent gaze with an exasperated glance, shaking his head very slightly. Under the cover of Lucifer’s next remark, he murmured back.
“- need to worry,” the words drifted into the gaps between the black demon’s words.
“He’s just -”
- another section of the island -
“- us safe.”
Rook trapped a sigh inside her chest and stepped away from her near-white twin with an abruptness that left him looking alarmed.
Good. They were in an unfamiliar place, a stranger had extended a too-good-to-be-true invitation to his home, and Jester was being the fool that he always was. As usual, it was up to Rook to try and look out for them both. And with all the anxious energy thrumming beneath her skin, she couldn’t stand still even a moment longer.
“If it’s not safe here,” she began, approaching the black stallion’s side.
“I would sooner head straight to your home. I should be sufficiently recovered, if the journey is not too long.”
There was no sense in fighting what seemed inevitable. Instead, Rook would sooner walk into the lion’s den with her head held high.
Jester, on the other hand, just looked surprised and off-balanced. But he stepped forward regardless, showing his willingness to follow.
OOC: I’m going to close it here and put at least one of them up in the Dunes :)
