meet me where the wild things grow Posted on June 18, 2026 at 00:05:18 AM by Thisbee
Thisbee hadn’t noticed it before, but sometimes the clouds looked like shapes. There was one shaped like a flower, one shaped like a fish, and one that looked suspiciously like it wasn’t trying to be anything at all. Unless it was just a cloud-shaped cloud. Wait, was that cheating? It was hard to decide because she’d never played this game before.
Hi.
Still on her back, the red dun tilted her head towards the sound of that voice. Oh - it was a stallion. From down here, Thisbee could almost imagine what the grass must see before it gets eaten. It would probably be scary if he wasn’t smiling. Smiling back at him, she noticed the strange white marks on his head but didn’t say anything. Mostly because she was distracted by his question, but also because Mother had once told her that it was rude to comment on someone else’s appearance.
Even though Mother had always pointed out when Thisbee had twigs in her mane or leaves stuck to her coat. But maybe that was different because they were supposed to be in trees.
“I don’t know if I could do it exactly the same.” She admitted, rolling over to get her legs back beneath her. Her back was covered in bits of grass and leaves. “I wasn’t really trying to fall over. My legs just stopped being legs.”
But he had asked, so Thisbee decided to give it her best try. Flattening her ears determinedly, she started to spin again. It took longer this time before she fell over, but she thought that it was at least close to the same as last time. Lying in the grass while the sky whirled above her, she tilted her head back slightly to look at the sand-colored boy.
“Like that?” She asked, showing none of the self-consciousness one might expect from a creature who’d now fallen over twice within the span of only minutes. At least she seemed to be getting better at spinning, which surely meant that someday she’d be able to beat that showoff sky.
