Over the years I have given Aratz a lot of criticism here and elsewhere, specifically for his singles game. The main reason why is because I saw early on the enormous potential he had.
I remember saying in pelota chat "If Aratz ever gets offense as good as his defense and court positioning, all these guys are going to be in trouble." I was scoffed at.
He had a lot to improve. Loads of unforced errors, an inability to pass, a tendency to throw a soft-ball right to his opponent in the front, a lack of variety with his kill shots.
Every season he has improved. But this season, on this relatively new court, his singles game quality has made a leap forward. He must have put in some serious practice in the off season much like Benny has. Lots of passing, no more soft-balls, much better accuracy and developing a wonderful drop-shot that makes an excellent additional weapon. His 2-wall accuracy is finally there. He also seems to have picked up on the relaxed economy of motion that Manu has.
Well, Friday night was a major milestone for his singles game in my opinion and I feel I owe him some recognition. He played a perfect 2-set shut out of Manu 6-0, 6-0. Oh was it beautiful and oh did it ever feel good to watch as a fan from the beginning.
I am not saying Aratz will be perfect and unbeatable going forward or that there is no room for further improvement. He could use a 3-wall and an outside placement to compliment his inside shots. He does not have a brutal serve like some. But I felt his masterful performance and marked improvement deserved recognition.
