Very strange that Spain would choose to send delanteros to Colonia who would appear to have little chance to even be competitive much less successful.
Is there some reason I'm unaware of why Txanika wasn't chosen here who can clearly bring it on par with the world's best players? Txanika deserves far more opportunities than he is getting, and this would have been a great chance to let him shine. He had an excellent Dania season, acquitted himself very well in the Basque singles championship, nearly won the Markina Slam but-for a few bad juggling no-calls in favor of Erkiaga/Atain late in the second set, and won the title in Hondarribia in one of the best played partidos of 2026.
Nice to see Bailo get the opportunity here. All you need to do is watch his performance in Hondarribia to know that he is a top ten back courter who should be playing regularly in first division tournaments rather than being ignored or treated like he is always on the bubble. Same goes for Salegi.
But my favorite player selection of all is Argoitia getting chosen by Euskadi to participate in the 36m singles championship in Colonia. Is this finally a little bit of recognition for the guy that the Basque country doesn't seem to realize is destined to one day become the best back courter in the sport?
