As much as she wanted to stay out of the way of the wolves feeding, it seemed that she had failed. Hope opened the carcass and let the pup eat the best parts, as most of the wolves did when pups were present. The growth rate was so high that they needed the majority of the calories given by a single kill, and so were usually allowed to eat first. But Hope didn’t seem that hungry as she only ate a small bit of the sheep, pulling away to lap up water from a stream that was nearby. Atra’s eyes had been diverted throughout most of the meal; only occasional quick glances had been sparred. But she met Hope’s gave as the white wolf turned to her, and she was almost instantly subdued. Her ears pulled back and her tail pulled completely against her stomach. She was crouched so low that the hair on her stomach brushed against the ground. Her golden orbs immediately lowered their stare, not threatening the other female at all. Despite her lowered gaze, she caught the “follow me” that the wolfess shot her. She obeyed; slinking along with her legs still very much crouched.
Indeed she had wondered if Hope possessed powers beyond that of just healing. It ran through her mind even as she followed the wolf away from the kill, causing her heart to flutter with anxiety. Adrenaline was also pulsing through her veins, and it was quite clear she was on edge. She did not like being in an unfamiliar territory with a very possibly dangerous wolf. But there was a spark of hope that lay in the pit of her stomach. It seemed that she would at least be heard, as she had not yet been driven off. She wasn’t expecting questions to be asked of her, as she thought that this mysterious wolf would already know most everything that there was to know. After all, she had only ever really been to Cold Summers and here; she couldn’t possibly know something that Hope didn’t know? As they stopped, Atra noted the sudden change in disposition. Hope was more relaxed, more amiable. The young black wolfess relaxed a little, but was still respectful.
She was very surprised, however, at the sudden question. The name of Waptumewi sounded weird, and it seemed to hang in the air. She suddenly became very worried, as the memory of the white wolf’s words resurfaced. ‘It might be best not to mention me.’ Hadn’t that been what he had said? Had this female lead her away to pull the name out of her, and then for some unknown reason, fall into a rage and kill her? Oh yes, she could very well imagine it. Some strange power that not only had the ability to give life, but to take it away as well. It would be violent, and very painful. She just knew it.
Once more her body held the tell tale signs of worry and stress. She seemed to be debating whether or not she should answer the question truthfully. If she said yes, would Hope be mad? It was her fault, so why would she take it out on poor Atra? On the other hand, if she said no… Would she be able to tell? Could she tell a lie from the truth? Something told her that the white wolfess would be able to tell, and that she would indeed be angry with that. At least if she answered truthfully, there was always a possibility that Waptumewi was misinformed, and that there was nothing to fear after all. And besides, hadn’t she come here to find out about the paranoid wolf anyways? ‘How did you plan on getting answers on him without revealing his name?’ She asked herself harshly in her mind. This seemed to put the finality in the answer that she was going to give. A cautious glance was given, and then she spoke.
“Yes… It was him…. He… He said that… I shouldn’t mention his name…”
There was a pause, and she shifted her weight a bit between her paws.
“Why would he say that?”
Yes, it was a tentative question, but she had asked it. She had spoken the words that had been buzzing around her head since the moment she and Ater had left Blossom Forest. She looked up at Hope, this time not it did not fall as quickly. Her eyes held her longing to know, her want to not be ignorant of the past of her home. She just wanted to know.
“Why was he so scared?
