At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

It was unfair, all of it. The scent of her tears caused him to look away. It was almost too much, seeing her this way. Her struggle causing him to also feel pain. He practically fell to the ground, his shoulder aching and his body heaving. It was worse for him for the loss of his sight created a sense amongst him. He could feel her emotions rolling off her bodice in waves. The worse pain was the pain inside. The pain from feeling her ache like she was. He faced away from her for two reasons; he couldn’t rest his weight on his left shoulder and he knew she would be too self-conscious to eat before him. She was so still that for a minute he believed she died. Finally, he heard the scuffle of paws, felt the vibrations of her fall. He rose to his hind quarters and turned to her in case she was hurt. If need be, he would move the deer closer to her. Before he could move though, she stood on her own, shaky pillars. He watched her for a moment, and then he turned his head away to give her space to eat.

The hessian’s thoughts drifted as she ate, he didn’t even hear her make a sound really. He was remembering the past, a time when was never ending. The loss of his family had taken a toll and he actually believed for most of his life it was his fault. Was that what he was doing here now? Redeeming himself? No, he still didn’t know the reason for his actions; he just knew that if he lost her, his soul would also be lost. It seemed like the world was lost to him and she was a light in the darkness. The land grew quiet and the sudden stillness caused Kenai to look back. Crimson covered her maw and muzzle. The first deer’s hind parts were practically gone. She fell more than sat and he quickly shifted his amber gaze back to her. He could feel the guilt roll off of her in waves, they crashed into him and he took a sharp breath. The strong boy felt weak but not from the hunt itself, he was weak from her. No, blame was not being put upon her, it was the truth. The worry and stress that had appeared in his life was already beginning to take its toll. He wouldn’t show it though. She had enough on her plate as it was. He watched her rise slowly and approach him, with one meal she looked better and he could only imagine what happen when she was healthy.

It was obvious she was still weary of him. Who could blame the lady? Most likely she had been abandoned, lied to, or deceived as she lived. She wouldn’t look at himHe watched as her demeanor shifted. He could see the form of her eyes flatten, her shoulders sag, her strength leave. He softened his gaze, willing her to look at him. Her musical, melody floated into his audits as she sat beside him. The poor lassie was struggling so bad over the fact that she hadn’t said thank you. He hadn’t even thought of that, he didn’t care about manners at the moment; he cared about her well-being and her safety. “You have nothing to be sorry for my dear. You do what you have to do.” He leaned forward and nudged her cheek gently. “I do not forgive for things that do not need to be forgiven.” He could smell salt water beginning to appear yet again.

He stood up and nodded towards the cool water beside them. “Do you have the strength to swim?” His eyes brightened and he let a smile slide onto his kissers, revealing pointed daggers. Water always calmed him when he was upset, hopefully, it would help her too. Without waiting for her reply, he padded into the water, feeling the ripples against the rocks to avoid twisting an ankle. When he was far enough out, he lifted his legs and began to paddle. The water’s fingers felt good against his shoulder and it untangled al the knots in his pelt. It washed away all the uncleanliness from his bodice and soul. He turned his hazel portals to where she was and perked his ears forward. He was waiting for her to join him.
