without the fear we are all as good as dead

He was restless; the recent challenge for his home had left him constantly on edge, seeing enemies in every shadow. He had never been a trusting man, especially not of other men, and with fall now upon them… well it gave him more than one reason to worry. He strode quietly around the area, checking on the few mares that dwelled within the forest now. He had asked that they remain close to one another and close to him as of late. There were too many dangers lurking beneath the canopy these days.

Fayte was particularly hard to keep track of. She had a knack for wandering off at night to one of the few clearing the forest offered to gaze at her stars. He found the idea of reading thing amongst those twinkling lights interesting, but it was not safe. Sure enough the similarly spotted girl was not where he had last seen her and he quickly followed her scent to the river. He found her with trickles of water still glistening on her copper nose. He snorted quietly and made his way toward her, nickering softly as he approached.

Stopping alongside her he nuzzled the curve where her neck met withers, huffing a warm breath against her cool skin. Autumn fell quickly on the islands, a chill was already in the air driving away the suffocating humidity of summer. Soon the leaves would turn and the forest would be one of the most impressive sights the islands had to offer. Finally he pulled back, turning his gaze to the surrounding area while running through a mental checklist of safety precautions. “Ehts a dangerous tahme of year,” he said finally, his deep voice rumbling from his chest thick with his accent. She knew how much she loved star gazing, it was almost more of a duty than a passion to her, but he had to ask her to be more careful.

Danger abounded and sometimes it even wore their own skin.

it is not violence that sets mens apart, it is the distance that he is prepared to go
