Grayson couldn’t help the relieved sigh that escaped his throat as Tristan mentioned that Saffron was ok. When he left, he was sure to leave her a note, a note she was supposed to burn after reading. He knew she would be ok. After Grayson left without saying a word and Saffron probably playing dumb about the whole thing he was sure Nimmy would keep a close eye on her. He knew in his heart she would be safe, if he didn’t think she would have been, he would have never of left in the first place. “Good, I’m sure they’ve kept her occupied.” That girl was so into reading, she had even taught him how to read and write, something their mother had failed to teach him. But then again, at that age, he would have probably never focused enough to learn since he had been so preoccupied with fighting imaginary monsters.
He stroked Era’s head. He really could explain how he was feeling. Even after doing all he did and doing such an unspeakable thing as stealing he knew he had to tell him. He was never very good about keeping any secrets. And keeping something like that locked away inside him, well, it would just eat away at his soul. Grayson wasn’t a pirate, or he didn’t believe himself to be. The only things he stole were food and a blanket or two and that was only if he couldn’t find anything. Grayson’s sunken green eyes were beginning to fill back in, the dark circles were no longer there, he had also put back on a few pounds. He was more muscular then he used to be. But then again, last time they saw each other had been quite some time ago.
“No, not like a pirate.” Grayson said with a quick shake of his head. “At least I hope not! I didn’t loot for possessions, just things I needed to survive. And I only did it if I had too. I won’t ever do it again, I feel so horrible. But I didn’t steal from anyone who looked like they needed it, so I guess that’s ok right?” He sighed, knowing he was trying to just trying to justify what he had done. But of course he wouldn’t ever do it again. Grayson placed a finger over his heart and made a cross over it, “cross my heart and hope to die!” he said with a halfhearted smile. “Thank you Tristan, for still being my friend.”
Grayson watched as his friends smile quickly turned into a frown. With a raise of an eyebrow he wondered if that was hurt he had heard in his voice, “no, no they shouldn’t.” Grayson leaned back against a big plush pillow he placed behind him and folded his arms in front of them. Grayson sat their observing his friend and confused by the sudden emotion, and then it hit him just as the words began to flow from his mouth. “Oh my Tristan, I’m so sorry…” Grayson didn’t really have any words, having known how he reacted to his own mother leaving him he knows how he was feeling. Trying to lighten the mood he said, “well, I guess you, Thoth, and I are all now missing family. Guess were all connected in a weird way.” he looked down, knowing that even those words probably wouldn’t make him feel better. “Where is Thoth by the way? I haven’t seen or heard hide nor hair of him? He was still looking down, fumbling the fringes of the carpet. He didn’t see Tristan biting his lip and drawing blood, but as Tristan words came forth he didn’t even have time to actually process what he was saying before tears started to roll down his cheeks.
This was Grayson’s first brush with a death of someone he knew, he couldn’t help the reaction. Brushing the tears away the sleeve of his jacket he whispered, “I can’t…I’m….oh Tristan!” He clutched Era, pulling her into her chest. This was much worse than anything Grayson had experienced, so he understanding disappeared and sadness for his friend filled up inside him.
