Enocra Woodland

Pine, spruce and firs alike...
Dense coniferous forests cover the woodlands, with clearings, paths and the occasional wildberry shrub throughout. Pine, spruce and fir make up much of the forest in the east, with the forest becoming swampier in the west towards Mecor Valley. In the west, cypress trees dominate, with fallen trees creating bridges across and throughout the stillwaters.

The smile glittering in her eyes brightened at his greeting and friendly demeanor, observing his hesitant tail-wag. But she was most enthused by the sound of his voice, masculine and heavy with an unfamiliar accent. How interesting! Her tail waved back and forth in an encouraging manner as if to say, ‘See? I’m warm and welcoming! Let’s be friends.’ And even as she smiled admiringly on the new male tucked into the forest, certain she would quell his fears, she saw his expression change from one of hopeful greeting to quiet horror. If she had been paying attention she would have been noticed the quieting of the raucous blue-jays that lived around the creek. She would have noticed the change in the sound of the running water around her feet.

She would have seen the shadow cast over her shoulder.

But she wasn’t paying attention to anything beyond her exchange with the new male, and were he not less single-minded, she would have been crushed into the creek under the massive black wolf. At the change in his expression she first wondered what she had done to offend him, and only then followed his line of sight. By the time she locked eyes on the dark intruder, he had covered the distance between them and taken the blow meant for her. Her scream drowned the echoes of his defensive cry.

Instinct overpowered her light-hearted demeanor and a snarl rolled violently from her core, her entire body quivering with the power of it. Her lavender eyes, generally light and playful, swung swiftly over their rolling forms, waiting for a break in the action to assess damages. The fur along her back stood at full salute, her ears lay completely flat, and she stalked the rolling blur that was their confrontation.

A pause! She lurched forward, lips drawn back and quivering with the waves of growls that ripped away from her. Their attacker was muttering to himself. Words she didn’t understand. His jaws dripped blood. “Are you insane?!” She shrieked it at him, pleading for him to leave them in peace, desperate that her first friendship should not end in death. And still he would not stop...she pressed her body against that of her companion, offering comfort even as she stole some for herself.

The black monster circled them, as if he would devour them both and it would be as though they had never lived. He would leave nothing of them. He wouldn’t stop. And it certainly wasn’t going to end with them. She fought the familiar sensation as she lost her grip. “No...” she moaned, more to herself than anything. But her thoughts overwhelmed her. Anxiety crushed itself against her chest, squeezing the air out of her, and the world narrowed. Bright colors flashed across the projections of his slinking form.

Then darkness fell over her eyelids as she fell into a dead faint.
