At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

A‘I know you can take care of yourself, but I am your mother and it is my duty to care and worry about you. You need not be worried about me, I trust Henadin and so should you. He isn’t the wolf you think he is and if anything was to happen we would get through it.’ Terrel was a stubborn wolf; he endured by his own thoughts and did not (or perhaps it hurt too much to do so) appreciate other wolves’ feelings at the worst of times. But despite this, even Terrel could not contradict their strength as a mother and son. But perhaps that was why it was challenging for Terrel to let go, perhaps one of the motives was that she would be carried away on a dream land… And what if Henadin disappeared? Terrel would be left to pick up the pieces of his mother’s traumatised heart. He couldn’t let his mother become hurt… Why did he have to be the one to go through it all? Terrel blinked a few times – what would happen to her if he let her? What would happen to him? He already knew. They would engage in numerous activities together, leaving him aside. Then they would have pups and discard Terrel like a piece of litter. And he would be forgotten…

He had attempted so numerous justifications to halt their pronouncement of being partnered together, one of which was the trouble of birthing… ‘I know they don’t. That thought passes through every females mind but it is a risk that we have to be prepared to take. Yes, one day myself and Henadin may have pups but that won’t be for a very long time.’ Terrel sighed… He did not believe any of her once soothing lyrics – they would bound to have pups; and soon. The thought distressed him – and what if he left her then? She would be a single mother, alone in the crooked world. Terrel beheld the troubles of his mother, the insanity of her slowly suffocating mind. His lobes pinned back against his head – how it distressed him so. He couldn’t let it happening again and with this circulating around his clouded mind, Terrel’s breathing formed into a rough and uneven rasps. Terrel’s maw emitted a whimper of pain, he couldn’t let it happen - he couldn’t let it happen. HE COULD NOT LET IT HAPPEN!

‘I assure you Terrel, I am not trapped. I was not pressured and have chosen this path of my own accord. If I had felt pressured or unhappy then we would not be in this situation. It saddens me to know that you witnessed such terrible things at such a young age but nothing like that is happening here, I promise you. I would have hoped that in the future you would have come to care for Henadin, but if you can tolerate him without tearing chunks out of him every time you see him then so be it. I will be happy with that. Thank you.’ Terrel said nothing, scowling profoundly at her with stubborn eyes. What did she know? Was she some type of physic?

The world seemed to twist beneath his grip, he felt his world was tumbling into a black hole; sucking the life out of every-

It hurt so terribly so!

The next thing he knew was that he was upon the ground, trying to shake the clouded emotion that engulfed his body. He barely registered the gentle nuzzling of his mother. He barely registered the soft words she spoke in order to sooth him. His ears flickered and his muzzle twitched uncontrollably. Terrel leaned against his mother – what was happening to him? His head pounded with every twitter of a bird. Deep breaths – was that what his mother (that being Channing.) had said? Yes. So he followed this advice enabling to aid himself into smoother breathing. His head, however, remained clouded and painful.

And Henadin had done this to them… to him. But even more humiliating was that he had allowed this titan to do it.

What an idiot.

for my head on a silver plate
just a puppet on a lonely string
oh who would ever want to be king?'
