Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

The small gathering at the lip of the pit had proved to be as fruitless as her encounter with Leviathan. There had been one who had seemed interested in speaking with Elowen, but she had politely said her hello and then left in her characteristically nonchalant manner. Crowds did not suit her, and so she slipped away from the splashing and the introductions to slink across to the opposite side of the crater from where she had started.

The landscape was different here; rather than steep rocks and overhangs boasting waterfalls, there was grass that in the summer would be lush and soft, with a river slicing it in two. The trees were sparse, but in warmer months the grass would provide adequate cover. At the moment, it was shriveled and brown, causing her footsteps to be audible whispers when the wind did not sweep the sound away. Though she stepped as lightly as possible, Elowen knew that if anyone were in the area, they would detect her no matter how silently she made her way. Her scent would carry on the autumn breeze to the noses of the hidden.

A sudden howl caused her to defensively press herself lower to the ground. She glanced from side to side, and inhaled deeply, but could not detect anyone. Upwind. Turning, she cautiously crept through the dry field. Whereas she was well-camouflaged in the western portion of this place, here her mottled grey coat stood out against the background, though perhaps not quite like that of the black figure that finally entered her vision up ahead.

He seemed relaxed, though Elowen knew better than to let her guard down. Keeping herself tense and ready for a fight (or flight) if need be, she stood a little taller than before as she walked toward the stranger. It was rather unlike her to seek out a conversation, but she wished to know who would be so dense as to actually attract potentially unwanted attention to himself.

About ten feet away from the black male, she stopped. Elowen held her head low, with her ears angled back a bit in a rather defensive stance. However, her face held only curiosity. Her navy-rimmed green eyes looked straight into his; they were of a similar color. As she stood staring, she tried to read his intentions, but years of self-inflicted isolation made her a rather poor judge of such things. To further illustrate her social ineptitude, she kept silent for several moments and waited for him to speak first.
