Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

I had never thought to leave Spirane, walk outside the borders to do anything ever that wasn’t at my birth home. Usually I am found nice and safely tucked away in my mountain home. I had learned to hunt there, learned to survive the rough terrain and Winter there was much harsher than it was in these flat lands. I looked around with my stunning green eyes, my currently pure russet coat not looking all that interesting with the dull colors of winter, but helped me blend into the area a little better. I looked better when the sun was shining and I knew it, for then when the sun touched my pelt I was almost gold, shimmering though the russet was still quite clear beneath the highlights. I looked good, I knew I did, I was told so by my mother… when she was around.

Doe had left me… Us… I think about Rhiannon all the time, though I rarely see her even though she’s my sister. I have other ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers’ too for that matter. Moonglow was now my ‘mother’ though I hadn’t seen her since she proclaimed that we would be taken good care of by her. Nor had anyone else apparently, she was away and Alcide was taking care of Spirane. Now I had a whole mishpocha rather than a family. I missed it when I was very little, learning to hunt with my mother Doe. She was only teaching us so we could be okay on our own once we were old enough, I knew that now. Then, she left, to be with my father I never met I guess. I didn’t understand that either, she picked him over us? I moved slowly over the snowy grounds with this thought on my mind, aware of the painful silence with the birds gone for the winter.

I usually sat in the woods of Spirane, listening to them sing and sometimes I got brave enough to sing back. Their songs were so beautiful; I was envious really of their abilities. I loved singing, but I knew I would never be as good as them. I found myself a good place to sit, I was certain if it were warmer there would be many birds here serenading one another, sounding their territorial music. I started humming some of their sounds, when running song to song together it made wonderful music. Thankfully I had been blessed with a decent voice, though I did not think it is so much as I did not do my winged friends justice. I just really wanted to sit and think, hum my songs and wonder what was out there for me next.
