Enocra Woodland

Pine, spruce and firs alike...
Dense coniferous forests cover the woodlands, with clearings, paths and the occasional wildberry shrub throughout. Pine, spruce and fir make up much of the forest in the east, with the forest becoming swampier in the west towards Mecor Valley. In the west, cypress trees dominate, with fallen trees creating bridges across and throughout the stillwaters.

Winter. It was definitely a favorite time of year for the white female. Hunting was easier at this time of year for the small prey still scurrying around in the thick snow. They foraged diligently for nuts and frozen berries under the snow, giving up eventually, and running back to their warm dens to rest up for the next round of looking for food. It made them especially easy because they were at their most vulnerable. A white pelt would be hard to spot when snowflakes were the size of quarters coming down in blankets; that is what gave her the biggest advantage of all. It wasn’t the need for energy that brought the squirrel out or the sniffing in the air, catching not a scent because she was downwind, but it was her excellent camouflage that hid her from view. Adina stayed low, her mouth opening slightly to scent the air. The puffs of breath coming from her were timid and repressed, keeping her heart rate down if anything. She scented with her tongue, tasting the air for any sign of another hunter interrupting her last minute meal of the day.
The sun was setting quickly now as she hunched her back legs down and lowered her head slightly. It was time to pounce, like her adoptive fox mother had taught her, or she would lose her dinner meaning she would be sleeping hungry tonight. Adina sucked in air, pacing herself and focusing on nothing but the small squirrel now too interested in the nut it had found beneath the layers of snow to notice anything other than filling its own belly.

Adina picked her left front paw up to test her footing. The grip would be loose due to the slickened snow but with precise movements she could pull it off. It was then that she wiggled her rump once before she lunged herself forward, but her footing had been wrong and her right rear leg flipped from underneath her. With a loud thud and a puff of snow, Adina faced upwards into the canopy of the Cyprus trees. The squirrel had already bounded off with its nut in mouth and heart pounding at its ribcage.

“I am such an idiot.” She grumbled under her breath, mentally kicking herself for letting her only shot at nourishment slip away. It was a devastating blow to her confidence at best. She’d never felt more like an inexperienced pup in her life. Not even that time she slipped in a rabbit hole and fractured bone in her paw.
