At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

She had just finished cleaning the half-coagulated blood from his pelt when suddenly his cranium rose upward, a gasp signaling the sudden regain of consciousness. The rush of inhalation sounded with a whoosh, causing Kahlan to jump in surprise. Slowly, his neck turned his head until his gaze met hers for just a moment and she noted the extreme dilation of his pupils, and she saw within their depths something she had never before seen there: fear. The moment ended, and his cranium lowered once more, burrowing into her pelt to block out the bright rays of the sun overhead. Silently, the femme was thankful that there had been a month between their two meetings in which she had had time to regain her previous glorious health. Had this been a month prior, her pelt would have been pitiful - dry, brittle, and thin. But since her brother's return from Abendrot had so nicely met up with her own return to Saw Tooth, she had been able to devote her time to getting healthy. It had started with the catch of fish Kenshin had gotten for her, and had proceeded with hearty meals and lots of rest. In between the two, she had gone for long runs, her limbs enjoying the exercise and the stretching. Muscle had been rebuilt, and her pelt had regrown to its current state: thick, full, and soft, mostly because of the downy fur that lay beneath her overcoat.

But then her mind switched to focus upon his action, which she realized was shocking in and off itself. He had of his own free will committed to touch. Before he had always been so careful in avoided any physical contact, even so much as avoiding their hair brushing against one another. Except, of course, when she had fainted and he had dragged her into the underbrush. But when she had come to, woken at last, he had been far from her side, once again a respectful distance from her. But not now - now instead of fleeing to the brush he hid his cranium in her pelt and seemed soothe by her presence and by her scent. Despite herself, she lay her own head atop of his, relaxing against him.

They stayed there like that for what seemed like hours as Kenshin's breathing became more regular, and it gave her time to think. What, or rather who had he killed to be so fully covered in blood? It had covered him from nose to tail and had completely soaked his entire form. And then there was the matter of his loss of consciousness. What a pair they made! The two times that they had met up, they had each lost consciousness. The first time, it had been she, collapsing from sheer exhaustion and malnutrition. But this time it was the brute who had collapsed, and she could have no way of knowing why he had fainted. Had it been remembering dark memories of the past? Or perhaps a mental ailment...

Suddenly his chest rumbled and words, more than she had ever heard him speak before, rolled off of his tongue so silently she scarcely heard him at all. He told of his childhood and how he had been not adopted, but apprenticed. From an early age he had been turned and painted of a dark shade, and had been shaped into an assassin. He had grown to have a taste for blood and had murdered many for no benefit except personal gain. Though she remained silent for the entirety of his tale, she shut her eyes and quivered when he spoke of killing innocents and infants, trying to force the images that grew in her mind to fade away.

She had promised him that should he ever wish to divulge his past to her, that she would listen, and that she would understand... but this was different. It was not abuse that he had suffered but rather abuse that he had inflicted upon others. Could she look past this? Could she understand it? Could she forgive what he had done? His words changed to a softer tone. I vowed to change myself. At five years of age, my life had been devoted to thieving and killing. Seducing and stealing. I wanted to change... I want to change... He pressed even further into her pelt and despite herself she leaned into his touch, finding that even now, even with what she knew, she desired his touch. But I am beginning to see that perhaps that is impossible, after all.

For a time, Kahlan remained silent, not knowing what to say. But then she realized that she was wrong. Yes, he had done wrong, but it had been forced upon him and villainous acts was all that he had ever known. And whether or not he remembered... he had saved her. "Kenshin, you are wrong. It is not impossible to change, it is just that the way you have lived your life is all that you have ever known. You have never been shown a kindness nor another path for you to tread. I understand... I have my own dark past, which I shall tell you at a later time for now is not the moment... but if you want to change..." Her voice faded for a moment as she noticed one single, last residual fleck of blood and hesitantly allowed her tongue to escape, caressing the base of his aud and hoping that he wouldn't move away from her touch as she removed the final clot. "If you want to change, I will be here for you and I will help you. Kenshin, I will not leave you unless you wish me away..."
