why study history when you can live it?

those who do not learn from history
are doomed to repeat it
The Tropics have a volatile spring. I would not have guessed it. But the storms off the coast are getting stronger and stronger and I’m spending more time inland. Not that I really mind it. I mean, seriously, more time with Sahin and Mera is great! The trees provide a wonderful barrier against the winds and waves. I’m sure there’s better shelter in case the storms get worse…

Today, thankfully, the sky was crystal blue and the sea was not angry. So that meant I could go explore the shoreline and see what was dragged on the beach. I poked at a few pieces of driftwood when the sea wind brought something quite different to my attention. It was a scent I remembered. For a moment, I remembered the cold and the fear.

In that moment, I was back in the Arch. I was a scared girl, who was pregnant with the child of a stallion who tortured me. He didn’t speak, but I always wondered if it was because he couldn’t. He only spoke in primordial grunts. There were others in the herd, I knew. Rusalka, who I felt safer around; the mare who seemed to belong to the territory, the palomino draft. And then there was the other one. The one that hung around the Brute without fear.

I spotted the brown body from down the beach. She seemed to be moving slowly, maybe hurt or tired. I decided to investigate. I trotted over the beach full of flotsam and jetsam, easily stepping or jumping what was in my way. Finally I came close to the mare. What was her name?

I called out then approached. This was my home. I had a right to poke about when others showed up from the sea. I trotted up to her, finally deciding that I would ask the question.

“‘Ello dare,” I said as I came to a halt in front of her. I traced my eyes over her outline. I doubted we had spoken before. “Ah rememba yer smell, suga, bu’ Ah dun dink we eva ‘ad a chad.” Well, always best to be forward. I’ve always thought that.
