howling ghosts, they reappear

"We're late!" Danny yelped it as he jumped out of bed, his newly shortened hair all askew and his eyes still clouded with sleep. He took a hurried step but his foot had tangled around the blankets, so he did a half slide, half fall into where Solarius slumbered peacefully. Danny tripped into his familiar, tangling them both up in the blankets so well that they took several moments of still-mostly-asleep struggling to extract themselves.

It was then, as Danny finally managed to pop his head out of the blankets, that he realized the sound he'd heard was the door to his brother's room closing and that it was not, as he'd thought, mid-morning but still rather early. Solarius, quickly discovering this for himself, growled grumpily.

"We still have hours!" the familiar grumbled. He tugged a corner of the blanket over his face and huffed loudly, apparently fully prepared to fall back asleep.

"Yeah, but," Danny answered, stumbling back to his feet. "Maybe we're getting an early start?"

"You can get an early start, I'm staying right here," Solarius shot back. In seconds, the familiar's loud snoring filled the room again. Danny spared his companion a brief glare, but couldn't muster much heat behind the look. He was sorely tempted to crawl back into the nest of blankets for another few hours of sleep, but he knew if he did he really would be late. Instead, Danny readied himself for the day and, after a glance to reassure him it wasn't quite time yet, settled back down with his notes for the day. Half of them were things he needed to memorize for an upcoming test with Doctor Gupta, the other half was for Dylan's training. In what felt like no time, Dylan was pounding on his door. Danny whipped it open so quickly his brother nearly knocked him on the face, but was instantly distracted by his brother's question.

"What?" Danny asked self-consciously, running a hand over his shortened hair. He added, a bit defensively: "It's easier to take care of like this."

"Ugh, is it time already?" Sol grumbled, finally rolling out of the nest of blankets. "Where are we going again?"

Danny left Dylan to answer that question as he scrambled around his room, picking up a few of the materials he'd managed to track down as well as his notes and a surprisingly small book. Finally exhausting the pockets in his coat, he handed Danny a round wooden bowl and two large green spheres made of stretchy material and filled with sand.

"You carry these for me," he said distractedly. Then, standing in the middle of the room, Danny patted his pockets again and did a mental inventory, finally nodding. "I think I'm ready to go now."
