Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

He likes to bounce. I nodded in understanding. It is understandable that a pup loves to bounce, but soon he will find out that not always he need to bounce his prey.

- Sometimes you will need…

My voice was gentle, giving him some hope and make him happy. There is no need to make the hunting lessons boring or super serious. We can play and laugh together, it is not something that I want to stop from happening, after all it is natural from a pup and it is always better, as they learn quicker when they like the lessons. Of course it won’t be all fun and laughs, we should be serious, just not overly so. I told him about how strong we can be together and how we could defeat a prey that could fight back. His eyes widen and he asks me what if he didn’t want to get hurt.

-Just be careful. The prey knows the strength of us together and mostly will run. Depending on the prey, you can avoid the head when they have horns and their hooves. You should be safe, so don’t worry.

I assured him, letting him know. It is not always that a prey fights back. Sometimes it does, but we can run from it and even ambush it. When they notice we outnumber them, they can’t do much anymore. While nuzzling him, I told him that he should be excited, but not too much. He frowned and asked… Like the squirrel? Well…

-Yes, Exodus… Like the squirrel. You just want to take care to avoid that happening again.

I confirmed. It wasn’t such a bad thing what happened, but now he knew how he could lose the prey when too much excited. He nodded in understanding and the moment I tell him to go find a hare he jumps and his tail wags in excitement. A half smile forming on my muzzle before telling him to come with me. We start walking and he follows me close, looking around in attention. He tries to be quiet and we walk mostly in silence through the fields. The wind making more noise than us. The moment comes and he touches his nose to my flank, I looked back and he motioned to the fuzzy think in the grass. I lowered, using the hunting stance, like I taught him. He follows, crouching and pricking his ears forward. He whispers, eager clear in his voice.

- Remember what I said. Relaxed, calm. Remember the feeling… What will happen when it sees us? It will run. We don’t want that to happen. We need to get closer so it won’t be able to run from us… When we get closer I will tell you the time to bounce.

Voice coming in a whisper and slowly approaching the prey, crawling silently taking the grass as an advantage and looking at Exodus, hoping he would follow beside me. I tried to observe the distance from the hare to the pup, calculating the distance for him to perform an effective bounce… When he reach that distance I would nod my head, letting him try to bounce the hare. It would be the right distance to bounce and it was possible to catch it. But if he didn’t, it would be no reason to be ashamed, it was his first time trying. We would learn like this, by trial and error. Each time we tried and he couldn’t I would tell him what happened and how he could improve. We would train with a still object and then we would try again.

Soon, he will be able to hunt.
