There is No Honor in Tricks

_________________________________________________________________________

The femme was walking through the forest alone for the first time in a while. Her annoying sister was always following her, wanting to play and do other things with her. What the femme needed was a moment alone, a moment of peace away from the younger ess. And so one morning she slipped out of their shared den while Nymeria was still fast asleep. The young girl always slept soundly, nothing could wake that girl when she was truly asleep. Lady was never able to sleep that deeply, she was too paranoid about what was out there. But not Nymeria. Either Nymeria was too naïve or was too stupid. Her younger sister always thought that she could handle herself, could take on anything or anyone that may come their way. The stupid, foolish girl. Luckily Lady was always a light sleeper so if something ever did come to hurt them she would be the one to wake up and get her and Nymeria away, hopefully, in time. But if the younger girl was on her own what would protect her from everything and everyone that was out there. The petite fae knew that she should not leave her sister, even if it was only for the morning, but she just had to get away for a little while.

Lady very quietly and very carefully slunk out of the den, making sure not to touch the sleeping bodice of her sister, and pushed herself out of the den and into the sun. It was still early in the morning but the sun had already risen, warming her gray fur. She shook out her pelt, wondering where she should go in the short time that she had away from her sister. She knew it couldn’t be long until Nymeria woke up and followed her scent to wherever she would end up. Her sister always had an annoying way of finding her, no matter what Lady did. She thought hard on a way to try and trick her sister, mask her scent somehow. And then something, a small tidbit, that one of her brothers had said before, said to Nymeria actually, about tracking. Water would hide a scent. If she went to a river and traveled through the water then her sister would not be able to follow her trail. A rare smiled appeared on the femme’s kissers and she headed in the direction of the river at a trotting pace, wanting to get there before her sister woke up.

It did not take the petite femme long to reach the river. She paused for a moment, wondering if it would be muddy in the water and if she would get her pretty little paws dirty. That was not something she was interested in doing now or ever. Being clean and pretty at all times was something that Lady was proud of, something that her mother had taught her to do. Her yellow orbs glared at the water, daring the river to dirty her in her walk. After a few moments inner dilemma she gingerly stepped into the water and began walking up the river, not sure exactly where it would take her. It was not like her to go to unknown places on her own. She did not like stepping out of her comfort zone, into the unknown. A part of her was afraid, not sure what could be out there, but a small, hidden part of her, was happy to be out and exploring her new home for the first time. She walked lazily through the shallow area of the river, not wanting to get her recently groomed pelt wet. The sun warmed the fur on her back and she smiled again, enjoying the lazy day she was planning on having.

After a little ways of walking she decided she was far enough away that she could venture out of the water and that Nymeria would not track her down. She daintily shook her paws off before stepping onto the sand. She took a moment to walk around a bit and look around her, curious to see where she was and if anyone was nearby. She knew that she hadn’t wandered into another pack, she made sure not to do that, so she really had no idea where she had wandered off to. And then she noticed him. An interesting looking brute, lying down in the sun near the water. He had a thick good looking white coat with a unique stripe down the center of his face. She rudely stared for a moment before looking away quickly. His appearance was unique, not bad by any means, but different. She considered approaching him for a moment, but she did not know him. He could be a nasty mean brute, like the one she had been in love with, and she was too afraid to approach him. For a moment Lady considered just turning around and leaving, going back to the safety of her pack, but something made her stay. She sat near the water’s edge, glancing again at the nearby brute before curling her plume around her paws.
