aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice

....................................................................................................................................................................................

Kalgalath felt as though he was empty, though not quite devoid of emotion. No... he was feeling things all too acutely. He felt alone, no longer having a femme to call his mate. But then again, had she ever truly been his mate? Their love was one that had never been consummated in the eyes of the Gods, and for the long months that they had been together, for the year that they had ruled together, she had been gone more often than not. When he had asked her why she had left, she had said that it was to prevent pack from seeing her and her troubles... but the pack was family. It was not a tyrannical society that needed to have a single strong ruling idol... that was not how he had set up the pack. Instead, he made it as a functional unit, where everyone contributed to their strength and where you could lean upon one another to thrive. Where you were weak, another was strong, and it was because of this that he had made the choice he had - to leave his mate. To banish her and challenge her to refuse, in order to properly strip her of her position. Twice he had challenged her and twice she had said nothing. Just as he had gained his position without a fight, Zig had lost her position without a fight.

More than that, Kalgalath felt guilty and selfish. He had taken Zig as his mate without fully thinking through whether she would benefit the pack or cause it detriment. To be an Alpha was to put the pack in front of yourself and always think of the greater good. How many times had he erred in this, and yet his pack mates accepted his faults and supported him no matter what. The mottled brute felt guilty for taking the only maternal figure that his daughter had from her. It was true, that Blayre had rarely seen Zig and that they had barely bonded, but it had always been his intention to provide Blayre with the best and least traumatic childhood ever. How he had failed in that endeavor. Still, he loved her and thus far she had not held it against him, though with her growing and aging, she would no doubt start to become more rebellious than she already was.

Finally, and perhaps most strangely, Kalgalath felt relief. He felt guilty about it - about hurting Zig and challenging her to be sure - but there also was a great weight lifted from him. No longer would he worry if she was going to leave again. No longer would he have to make up excuses for his mate's absence. He felt that with her... perhaps a brighter attitude would be brought back to the pack. Was this optimism that he was feeling? It was something he had not felt in so long, it felt foreign and alien.

Now... it was just time to inform the pack. As he so often found himself, he was upon the single rock in the middle of the clearing, the one from which he always called a pack meeting. Where Zig had once stood by his side, it was empty and cold. Centering himself atop of the rock, he dismissed the thought. Tilting his grey skull skyward, pausing briefly to look at the overcast sky, he released a howl calling to him any who wanted company. This was not a meeting... not in the slightest. He just no longer wished to be alone. And... more than anything... he wanted to tell everyone the news.

Everything was going to be alright. It had to.
