I didn't know the words that had sent my mother's world into such a frenzy. I didn't know the words that had caused her to just stand there, unmoving, while tears leaked from her brilliant blue eyes. I didn't know the words that had caused my mother so much pain and caused a terrible cry of anguish to erupt from her maw, but it didn't matter. I had simply shot an accusing glance at the bearer of the bad news. I didn't know his name or where he came from, but I didn't like him. He made my Momma cry. And despite all of my flaws, I was very much a momma's boy, and seeing her in so much pain caused a similar pain in me.
As she carried me over the terrain back home, I didn't let out any squeak of protest when she stumbled, simply tucked my tail between my legs and made myself as easy to carry as possible. I certainly didn't want to be dropped, but I didn't think my mother was going to slow down. I let out a quiet whimper to try and get her to slow down before she hurts herself (or me) but either she doesn't hear me or doesn't care, because she doesn't slow until we get to Asteraia.
I let out a whine as she set me down, my white eyes staring at her as she collapses on the ground. I may not be the most well-adjusted of pups, but I know what my mother needs. Unsteady paws carry me forwards and I placed my paws on top of her nose, licking underneath her eyes to dry her tears. "Momma." I say in my monotone voice, though I hope she can somehow hear the sincerity. "Momma... don't... cry."
I gave up with a sigh as tears still leaked from her eyes. Perhaps she needed to cry. I still didn't know what had happened, I didn't understand what was making her so upset. I didn't catch her whispered words, instead I flopped on the ground next to her, wiggling myself up against her neck.
I hoped that maybe my contact would be enough to cheer her up. There wasn't much more I could do. I couldn't comfort her with words and I wasn't even old enough to know quite what to say. I could just... be there, and hopefully, that was enough.
