Taytim was jolted from her peace by another mare suddenly in her face and speaking to her without so much of a greeting. Taken aback, her ears flickered with confusion by the abruptness of the conversation and the strange question. She laughed softly at the other mare’s approach, already respecting her for the boldness of the encounter. Her brain raced to try to keep up. To buy herself possibly a moment of time, her ears flicked forward to show attention, and her head tilted slightly to the side.
The term ‘gods’ was fairly new to her, but it was not the strangest thing she had heard so far since coming to this land. In her life, she had been taught that everything should be given the chance to show their nature before the choice is made to be in their presence. Even a snake on a rock could just be living its life, enjoying the heat of the same sun that warmed your flesh.
“Neither.” She answered, shaking her body to loosen her muscles. “I do not know your gods, and they do not know me. If they walked the earth, they share in what it is, just as I do. They have their lives to live and their things to do, just as I was. If they chose to share their lives with me, I would invite them to share a bite of grass, a day, a night, or a year with me. As long as they chose and as long as I chose. If they wanted my company I would offer it, if I did not want theirs’, I would deny them. My life is mine to live, my world is mine to see. I would not trade that freedom.” She smiled at the new mare. “However, I do not know your gods, and I do not know what they are. But I stand by what I said.”
Her head lowered to a level under El Aran’s head and she smiled up at her with both ears and eyes. “Hello, my name is Taytim, by the way.” Replies:
