Anything by Roald Dahl! I'm working through James and the Giant Peach with my 5th grade student right now, and he just cackles all the way through. And so do I. They are just good books, regardless of reading level.

The Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville – interesting female protagonists, surprisingly complex family dynamics

I'm reading The Secret Garden with my rising 7th grader. I wouldn't call it a page turner for everyone, but certain kids end up really liking it, and it's dirt cheap because it's a classic. My student hates reading and she's gotten really into it.

The Abhorsen Trilogy is pretty dark, but it is definitely a page turner! I devoured the second one within days when it came out in my 7th or 8th grade.

I'm sure I'll think of more but those stand out.
