I can sense a change in the girl before me as the tension in the air disperses. I wait patiently for her to see that I am not going to hurt her and it seems my submissive form begins to work its magic. Though she is still cautious, I see her fur smooth along her back and her slender form returns to a neutral look. I still dare not look her in the eye but I notice she reaches for me with her nose and takes a sniff of my scent. It tells her a little of my story. I am much older than her and I am a stranger to these lands. Half of that is true, but it doesn’t matter. The finer details do not need to be told.
Further progress was made as the dame took a few steps towards me. For a moment, I started thinking she was about to attack but as I finally allowed my amber eyes to land on her I saw that she was not aggressive anymore. I smiled pleasantly and allowed my tail to wag happily behind me. Yes! I am a friend! Her head tilts in the most adorable way as her piercing gaze meets my own. I had to admit, the golden eyes against the black of her fur could be considered rather terrifying but her slender frame made it seem more cute than scary.
I listen to her talk, her song coming out quick and slightly confusing. She asks if I have a name and I nod my head, letting a loud Whimper echo in my throat. I smile and nod again, as if to reaffirm that this is the name I was given when I was born. Then she asks about voices and I cock my head to the side. Well I do have a voice but I guess it is my own. It has been many years since I heard the sound of my voice from my mouth so the only other voice I had was in my head. I smile again and nod to confirm her question.
There is a sudden sound, like a huge animal crashing through the forest. I look around and see some trees over on the edge of the caves, my eyes alert and ears held high. For a moment, I forget that I am with another wolf as I turn to investigate the situation further. I quietly pad closer to the trees but instantly regret it. Two huge bull elk locked together by their antlers tumbled from the tree line and onto the land of the caves. Thankfully, neither monster saw me as I darted away from their sharp hooves. I growled a warning as I rushed back to my newfound companion and hoped she followed me to safety. I had seen many things in my travels and nothing was more dangerous than a rutting elk or moose. They only had one thing on their mind and it was not our lives. We needed to get out of here and fast!
