aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Hellene had wanted each of the wolves to search for the plants on their own - after all, in an emergency, you likely would not have another healer there to help you or double check the plants that you gathered. But before she could stop them, Khaleesi and Daenerys ran off to look together at Khaleesi's urging. Sebring left on her own, and Hellene shook her head before gathering the things she would need for her next few lessons. When she returned, holding the hollowed out log filled with water, Khaleesi and Daenerys returned, each claiming to have brought poppy that they found in the terra. Hellene approached each, looking them over and smelling them. Daenerys matched her own, whereas her daughter had found a different species. "Good job Daenerys, you have matched your plant to my own. Khaleesi, my love, while you have found poppy, it is a different version, a different species. In this occasion, it will still have the same effect, although it may not be as potent. Be careful in the future, though, for there are many plants that mimic the herbs that you are truly searching for. It is best to stick with what you know instead of venturing into the unknown unless absolutely necessary - some of the mimics will be harmless, but others can be poisonous or even lethal." Just a few seconds later, Sebring arrived, carrying not poppy but instead garlic and moss.

"Good job, Sebring, on finding those two. They are the easier to find, as moss grows nearly everywhere and garlic's odor is easily identified. You need to go find poppy for yourself so you get accustomed to finding it. Khaleesi, Daenerys, you both need to get garlic and moss yourselves. You will need a sample of each for the next part of the lesson." She sat silent, waiting for them to retrieve their items, and only after they returned with their respective missing herbs, that she first checked to ensure they were indeed the right plants, did she continue.

"We will not be learning any other herbs today, but instead will be learning how to use them, depending on the situation. As a healer, you need to be innovative, as not every case will be by the book. For example, I told you that you would have them eat poppy and ginger, and that you would apply the moss topically. But what if they are vomiting? If they cannot keep the medicine down, it will not be there long enough to take effect. It will not work as well for ginger, but for poppy at least, you can soak it in a special container, like the one I have here that I carefully scraped out, and then soak the injured part of the body in it. This, of course, would not fit a whole body and is best only for wounds on the limbs, tail, and face. You could use a puddle in a pinch, but you would need a lot more poppy and you would then have to worry about contamination. Another option you have is to first soak the moss in water and then apply the poppy flax or seeds to the moss when you poultice the wound - this will allow for some absorption and some local relief of pain. Another option is to make them eat something that will cease their vomiting but we will discuss that a different day. Do any of you have questions so far?" Hellene paused, waiting to see if they had any questions, either about the techniques she had described or any situational cases they were curious about.

"The next part of the lesson will be interactional, as you need to practice your preparation - this is why you each needed to gather your own specimens. I am going to have you first try to break up the garlic gloves - it is harder than it seems. Grasp it by the stem and try to swing the head onto a nearby rock. Also try stepping on it - you will be surprised at how much pressure you need to do it. When you are done with that, nibble on one clove, but only one. While it certainly does have its benefits, in larger quantities it can be toxic. It is good to know the taste in case someone ever tried to use it to poison you or mask the taste of a poison. When you are done with that, you may use the water to rinse out your mouth. And then I want you to ingest the poppy - it is true that it will have an effect on you and will likely make you loopy, but you need to know how it will affect your patient and how long before it takes affect. And when you are done with that, you will need to start mushing up the moss and apply it to your own limb - try to make it wet enough that it is easy to spread but still thick enough that it will stay on until you harden. I can get more for you if you make it too loose the first time. Do not swallow it, for the only reason that it is bitter and may upset your stomach. As with before, if you have any questions, ask. There are no stupid questions." The fae was surprised to find that she was enjoying spreading her knowledge and teaching. It reminded her of the hours and days she spent sitting at her mother's paws learning all she could from her.
