The forest stands tall and lush here; ancient trees reach weather-twisted arms to the sky, fighting monster-like storm clouds back with their interlacing fingers. Shadow seems to lurk everywhere you look, but it spills calmly, coolly, inspiring a sense of stealthy calm or protection rather than unease. That is, if you've forgotten what kind of creature might be stalking just out of sight...Abendrot is a land cradled by the dark woods on all sides; in the center, some of the larger trees stay behind to reveal a small plateau - a citadel where this pack can gather and defend itself from invaders. There are, of course, softer sides to the land. Clearings here and there allow the sun to throw down its rays in incongruously resplendent gold showers. Ignore the lingering scents of blood spattered here and there along the borders: those do not concern you. The river on one edge of the territory is playful enough when it hasn't been gorged by violent rain. You can choose to note the ragged claw marks raked down tree trunks and the forest floor as friendly "Home Sweet Home" signs, if you wish.

All who treasure loyalty, order, victory, and the occasional indulgence of raw visceral pleasure are welcome, once they've been approved by the ever-watchful eyes of Abendrot's Alpha. But keep one thing in mind: no matter what your motive, this is not a fool's Paradise. This is the land of soldiers, assassins, and spies. This is ABENDROT.

Make up your mind quickly and prepare to prove your worth. You wouldn't want to add to those blood spatters, would you...?

Fear Makes People Do Terrible Things

_________________________________________________________________________

The skinny brown brute had been taking some time to himself, to get used to his surroundings and being in a pack. It was his first time in a pack since he could remember. He knew that he had been born into a pack, had even had a family. But he had lost all of that a very young age. He had been lucky enough to get away from the assailants with only some scars littering his face and body. He often wondered why he had not been killed as his family and rest of the pack had been. They must have thought him wounded enough that he would die, or that he seemed too young to be able to survive on his own. Either way he had survived and was still alive now. Most would have died in his situation, would have stayed there and given up and died. But Lupin was not like most. He had always been a fighter, and was not going to give up on his own life, not when he was still so young and had so much more that he could do in his life.

Those weeks on his own were no longer clear in his memory. He remembered a lot of blood, remembered always being hungry and starving and having to scavenge for food as he was too young and too small to hunt on his own. As he grew, though he grew awkwardly and was lankier than anything else, he was able to teach himself how to hunt small prey. It was often not enough and he still had to rely on eating the left overs of other to survive, but at least he had survived. The young brute had found some wolves in his travels, some just stared at him with his scars and awkward, skinny form, while others would snap and push him away, not wanting him near their food or pack. The ones that bothered him the most though were those that acted like he was still a newborn pup. It was always females too, they would look at him with sympathy and ask what had happened to him and where his mother was. It was as if the thought of him being on his own wasn’t possible to them, that there was no way he could have survived and lived on his own.

When the brown varg had firs met Halina, he assumed she would be like the rest of the females he had encountered. He had wanted to ignore her at first, in hopes that she would just move on and not even bother talking to him, but she had done just the opposite. And now Lupin was glad that he had spoken to her, that he had listened to what she had to say and what kind of life he could have with her in Abendrot. It sounded appealing to him. He would still have an independent life in a way, she was not demanding that she be his mother or anything like that, but more like a trainer, someone to learn from and look up to. Lupin could handle that. What he didn’t want was for another couple to come and be his new parents. He still remembered his own parents, and was not looking to replace though. Halina had left it up to him, he could come with her or he could stay on his own. If he came she left it up to him what she would be to him, and although she had offered “mother” as one of the roles she could play, she had not insisted upon it or demanded it. And that was why Lupin trusted her and went with her.

The brute was glad when Halina was okay with him taking some time for himself, not forcing her presence on him until he was ready. She had been able to accept him into the pack, and he thought highly of her for having such a rank that he could do that without the permission of the alpha. Clearly she was one that could be trusted, and Lupin was beginning to do just that. The last conversation that the pair had had was how he had not yet had any training, not anything formal anyways. He had taught himself how to hunt in order to survive, but other things like fighting and defense he knew not about. He had not run into any hostile beings that he was not able to outrun, and had never had need for such skills, though he was embarrassed to admit to the female that that was the case.

One morning, as the young male awoke to the sun rising, he knew it was time to go back and find Halina. He had been sleeping in different places around the pack, taking shelter under trees and bushes, not making a den of his own. He was still small enough to be able to take shelter comfortable outside, but as he grew he knew it would not be like that for long. As his small paws stepped through the trees, crunching softly in the snow that had fallen the night before, he paused a minute to stretch out his muscles and wake up his body for the day. With a yawn he turned in the direction that he knew would lead him to Halina’s den. The uniquely scarred female had showed him where she lived beforehand, so when the time came where he wanted to seek her out he would be able to. Lupin had always been practicing his tracking skills, and attempting to follow her around the pack during the day. He had been really bad at it when he first started, but his skills had grown better with practice. His skinny form sat down in the snow, near the entrance to her den so when the darkly colored female came out she would know he was there without invading her privacy.
