During the day, sentries guard the sleeping. When the sky is dark and the moon dances with the stars, this is when the real fun begins. Munashii Gekko's forest is the only haunt where you can find your local misfits all in one place. A land of the forbidden and forgotten, a place that is riddled with dangers of a whole different kind. The wolves here have long misplaced their rightful minds, and now live like creatures damned to prowl and lurk through the night. It's easy to lose yourself here, sanity was sure to fade away and wither; there was never anything normal about this nefarious nest. The silent threats that whispered in the breeze were enough to deter even the largest of demons around. It was not strength nor wit that ensured your survival here with Eric, and challengers would be torn down with a morose lethality - there was nothing left in his cold blue eyes that promised mercy to anyone who dared to overstep their worth. So, would you give up the sun for the moon and stars? Do you have enough vigor to become a well regarded sentry? - Put on a game face to step up and pass the sepia king's test or turn and leave before he catches your scent. You never know who wants to snack on your delicious blood in this forest.

It did not take too long for more pack members to find their way to the hill. The broadly built gent observed an admirably sized dark wolf come up and introduce himself as Summer. He offered his loyalty to Ameira before going and claiming his spot for the meeting. Nzingha. Danger. Horizon. Summer. He mentally repeated each name a couple times, cementing them into his mind. He recalled several of them from Ameira speaking of the refugees from Bright Moon. Another wolf had entered the area and he thought it might be Karla, another wolf that his fellow monarch had spoken of. Sure enough that is who it was; the ashen she-wolf beside him confirmed this by greeting Karla by name.

All the greetings were done and Horizon had led the way with questioning Titan’s presence. It was time for the meeting to be underway. She thanked them for attending and then gave them the explanation they were all waiting for. Why he was there, why the decision was made, what was expected to come of it. The group seemed split; some more receptive than others to the idea of a new leader. No one was aggressively opposed so far, so he considered that a small victory in itself. The demonica bred wolf had no emotional investment in any individual wolf before him but he had every care and intention for the pack as a whole to be lifted up. He had put his flesh on the line for the pack, the same as Ameira, and that wasn’t a meaningless act. In time he would be able to prove that to the pack. She finished speaking and stepped back, giving him the floor. Before he had a chance to begin, Horizon stepped forward on his thin stilts and addressed them. Titan nodded at the maned wolf as he finished. He understood where the male was coming from and doubted he would have approached such a sudden change much differently.

“That’s fair, Horizon. Trust and respect aren’t mutually inclusive, after all.”

Summer also took the opportunity to address him.

“That’s all I would ask of you, Summer.”

As opposed to a charismatic tone that so many leaders shared, Blood Titan had a naturally commanding tone. If he wanted, he could bark orders in the caliber of a military commander. He didn’t choose to utilize it as such, though. In this context, the tone simply served to draw attention to the speaker. He took a couple steps forward to the position Ameira had been in when she addressed the pack.

“As Ameira has already stated, my name is Blood Titan. Titan works just fine if you’d prefer. I’m not going to stand up here and come up with flowery speeches trying to persuade to follow me blindly. My intentions and abilities are much better proven through actions and commitment is proven only with time.”

Let’s face it, making speeches wasn’t exactly a course they taught growing up in Demonica. If anything it would prove his sincerity since he never bothered doctoring his words to better suit the occasion. He meant what he said and anyone that had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time with him knew this.

“Ameira and I have a lot of ideas for restructuring the pack. We’ve discussed them and come to final decisions. These changes will be effective as I speak them. The ranking system is going to operate differently than you’re used to. Each rank has a unique job that it’s assigned. The more vital and exhaustive the job is, the higher the rank. Horizon…”

Titan’s emerald eyes found the male in the crowd and, for a moment, addressed only him.

“Your rank of zeta has been stripped. Again, this is effective as I speak it. However, you will have first choice among the ranks for what would interest you. I trust what Ameira has said of you, that you’re capable and loyal, and I can see by your reaction to me you are protective of the pack. You’re skeptical on its behalf. These qualities are appreciated.”

He turned his attention back to the entire group, eyes looking to each member every so often.

“There will be an audition process in order for ranks to be assigned. If you’re interested in a specific rank, come to me or to Ameira. Some will be easier than others. Some may be a simple question and answer session; others will be proving your physical ability to handle the position. Depends entirely on what the rank calls for. Once you are given the title, you will be responsible for that job. You will make sure that whatever that job entails is taken care of. Ameira and I will observe and give progress reports when we feel it’s necessary. One or both of us will hold meetings every month or every other month for status updates from the ranked wolves.

I guess now the leading question is: what ranks correspond to what jobs. In the spirit of transparency, I’ll begin with what Ameira and I feel like the alphas are responsible for. This is what you all should expect of us and, if we’re not fulfilling our roles, you should speak up. We are the first line of defense against threats, be it challengers or intruders or otherwise. We are also responsible for making sure that there are other defensives as well. Realistically we are only two wolves and there is power in numbers. Our job is to make the territory feel secure. Our job is also to oversee the needs of the pack, whether that means through delegation or filling the roles ourselves. We make decisions that impact the overall well-being of the pack such as forming alliances and assigning ranks to wolves that will hold up to their part.”

There were other things he could have listed, but that was the main gist of it. Alphas assessed the well-being of not just the pack, but the land the pack lived in. Alphas made judgement calls and sometimes had nothing more than their gut to rely on. Alphas maintained balance within the pack. Alphas kept overzealous wolves in line and empowered unconfident wolves to reach their full potential. There was a lot to the alpha position that couldn’t be spoken well enough to describe. But most wolves were familiar with these principles and it could go without saying.

“The beta position is the only one that cannot be auditioned for. Rather that will be up to each alpha to choose their own. The best way to describe this would be the alpha’s apprentice. There will be a lot of responsibility on the beta, and a lot of respect earned with it. It’s likely that a wolf that has been in a rank for a time will be approached by one of us and offered the beta position, simply because being in a rank and staying there proves commitment and ability. This isn’t a guarantee; however, if we see promise in an unranked wolf we may approach them instead. I’m not sure that this position will be filled soon, at least not for me, but when it is we can elaborate more on what responsibilities fall to a beta wolf. The gamma rank is for our border patrol, recruitment, and a liaison. The delta rank will oversee hunting and fighers. The epsilon rank will be the healer. The zeta ranks will be pup sitting and caretakers. Iotas will be the activities committee.

Each rank will be allowed to take on apprentices. The apprentices may be chosen out of the omega rank. If you hold a rank or you’re an apprentice to a rank, you may not serve as an apprentice to another. We make that rule in an effort to make sure no wolf allows themselves to become overwhelmed, because some of us will certainly work ourselves to death, and so no one slacks on their own responsibilities. If you are an apprentice to, say, the healer, and you take an interest in border patrol, we expect you to speak with the healer before leaving your position as their apprentice. They may or may not need time to find someone else before they release you and it’s just plain respectful to do so. As a ranked wolf, you may approach omegas to offer them a position as your apprentice or there may be omegas that approach you because they’re interested. Be open to that. I don’t want wolves feeling limited. If you hold a rank that means we trust your judgement, so use that privilege wisely and to the benefit of the pack. The wolf that approaches you may have experience and want to use it or they may know nothing about it and want to learn. Both of those are acceptable.”

There was a lot more information to give regarding each individual rank; however Titan thought that could be more easily expanded on in an individual setting. If someone was interested in more information about a certain rank, or even wished to audition, that would be a more opportune time to get into the nitty gritty details of each one. He took a short break from speaking and scanned the crowd, nonvocally inviting any questions they might have. He would answer them, if any, and once things were settled he continued onto another topic.

“Another thing I want to cover before we dismiss is that we are seeking to make this pack a haven. Some of you are refugees and have already experienced this firsthand. We’d like this philosophy to extend especially to pups. Any pups that wander into the territory or that the recruitment team finds while they’re out and about are welcome to stay, to be fed, to be taken care, to be raised and educated. If no one in the pack is looking to adopt, then the pup will become a pack pup. Raised by the community and looked after by everyone. This will fall to the zeta rank more than anyone but no one in the pack will be tolerated shunning any of the pups that settle here. The only exception is if the pup smells like another territory... in that case they are to be returned there. I know firsthand that pups can be used as a means to get information and we're not going to risk that.”

And with that, Titan was satisfied with the information he had given. It was a lot to absorb and the pack certainly needed time to let it all sink in. It was a different approach to ranks compared to most of Blossom Forest, especially from the cookie cutter design of the packs he had experienced while growing up here. He stepped back to be even with Ameira once more and flashed her a look, nodding to let her know he was finished and now was the time for her to take over if she had anything else to add.
