Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

From her perch she could see a vast assortment of new things, things she had not known the pleasure of seeing before. The details of the land that surrounded her popped out, despite the white that encompassed the majority of the landscape. She noticed the way the light caught just right on an group of icicles dangling from an overhang of river rock, casting shimmers of light across the ground in a speckled, erratic pattern. And as her gaze ventured further downstream she noticed where a small rivulet joined the river, forming a perfect waterfall frozen in winter's embrace. A pine bough, heavily laden with snow, bent beneath the weight of its load, certain to give way and bury an unsuspecting victim in white powder should just the right nudge of wind be given at the right time. Moonfeather smiled as she took in all of the sights and sounds of wintertime along the riverbank. There was an entire world sprawled out just in this small section of Moladion, playing home to the animals of these lands that did not reign supreme, but were integral parts of its function nonetheless.

One such creature, a rabbit, came skidding out across the ice and Moonfeather perked up, her eyes trained upon the way it skid and careened across the slippery surface. A bold rabbit, indeed, to remain so plainly out in the open. But Moonfeather felt no desire to hunt the bunny, for it added to the ambiance of the world which she was a simple spectator of. The girl was even more surprised when a tawny wolf followed the rabbit onto the ice. She flinched forward, a need to intercede and save the simple animal's life gripping her heart; but that was the natural order of things. The rabbit must feed the wolf, and someday the wolf would feed the earth to give new life to the grasses that would feed the rabbit once more. Of course, these thoughts were pushed aside when laughter filled the air, and Moonfeather's head cocked to the side as she leaned forward, her forepaws on the edge of the rock, as if she was ready to leap forward, but frozen in time like so much of the wintery landscape around them.

Behind her, Kutcha made a low rumbling croak, but Moonfeather only switched one ear backwards to show him she was paying attention to him as well as the scene that unfolded before them. As soon as the greeting and invitation were called out, Moonfeather released her posture and sprung off of the rock. She needed no time to further comprehend the odd pairing of bunny and wolf - she, too, shared a bond with an animal that was not lupine. Jogging forward, she stepped nimbly onto the ice, but no amount of grace made her paws completely resistant to the slip and slide of the frozen water's surface. Though her paw pads did give her some grip, she still skated across the ice to a certain degree. "Hello there! I'm Moonfeather, and this," she laughed as her white-necked raven companion swooped over to land on the ice between the two young wolves, "is Kutcha. Don't mind him, he's just a bit picky is all." The raven crucked at the tawny girl and her rabbit a few times before deciding that they posed no threat to his charge, then hopped around on the ice, repositioning himself so that he no longer separated the girls. Moonfeather's tail waved back and forth happily, joyous to have become a part of the small world she had been so content to simply observe a moment prior.
