take a look through my eyes

It was getting late. Arthur pushed his way through a tapestry into the narrow passageway behind leaving the crowds behind him. As the fabric fell back into place behind him it muffled the sound of voices to an indistinct hum. He sighed as he unfastened the latch on the door at the end of the corridor and began to climb the hidden staircase. He didn't think he had ever been so glad of the castle's hidden places as he had been since the flood came. It was a mercy to be able to wind his way back to his rooms without worrying he was going to bump into someone bringing him one more thing to sign.

The staircase spiralled sharply upwards and each step was so narrow that he was barely able to fit the ball of his foot onto each one, but it was worth it when he reached the upper floors without once being detected. The central corridor ran the full length of the castle and contained the royal apartments; one each for him, his mother, his two siblings and Tristan. As he trudged the length of the corridor he noticed that the door to his son's rooms was ajar, and multiple voices were coming from inside. He paused outside and glanced in without crossing the threshold. Tristan was laughing, perched on the arm of the sofa in the centre of his sitting room with three of his friends sitting on the other chairs and two girls sitting on the floor playing with Tristan's dogs.
"The door's open!" the prince called to Arthur when he spotted him, "just like I promised." Arthur smiled and resumed walking, the girls' giggles following him around the corner.

He finally reached his own rooms and passed straight through his own sitting room to the bedroom beyond. He thought of his book sitting on the sideboard waiting to be read and the decanter of whiskey in the cabinet by the window.

Arthur had almost reached his bed before he spotted her and when he did his face broke out into a smile.
"Ciara," he greeted her warmly, his eyes lighting on the wine bottles in her hands, "this is a pleasant surprise." He continued past the bed and threw himself down in his favourite chair.
"It's been a long day," he explained as he started to remove his boots, "a long month, come to think of it." He glanced up at her again. "I am much in need of your company."
