* Psychic Locker: Russell has the ability to “store” items in a “psychic locker”. This is essentially Carter and Sadie’s power from the Kane Chronicles. Basically, Russell can “open” his psychic locker any time and hide any inanimate objects he likes there. He can retrieve them anywhere and at any time by reopening the locker again. He tends to use it to hide skeleton keys, lock picking devices, weapons, forgeries, and anything else he needs to pull off his scams.

Religion: Russ’s religion changes every other day, usually to a small, dead and/or obscure religion/cult. Whenever he ‘converts’, he gets thoroughly enthusiastic about his new religion and will happily discuss the details with anyone he meets. It’s not clear if the conversions are genuine, and there’s certainly an element of using it to his advantage in certain situations. Whenever he doesn’t want to do something, there’s often a convenient religious rule at hand.
Appearance: Russ is average height but small width-ways: skinny with narrow shoulders. He has floppy brown hair, a narrow face and blue eyes set at a slight slant - just enough so that he looks a little Asian when he smiles (think Michael Mcintyre). His skin is naturally quite light but tans easily.
Personality: Russell’s a charmer. He has the gift of the gab and can talk his way around most situations. He’s good at assessing people quickly and coming to swift character judgements, something which he regularly uses to match the right scam to the right person. He’s fairly eccentric, with an almost childlike personality and cheer. He’s almost always grinning. While he’s particularly good at sussing people out in order to con them out of their money, Russ is not so good at filtering between his brain and his mouth. He has a tendency to say whatever’s in his head, and isn’t responsive to non-verbal cues from others when they want him to stop speaking. He calls it his ‘disease’ - his mouth gets him into a lot of trouble, particularly since he’s witty and fond of cheeking people. He’s beaten up or hit so often that he’s nearly always sporting a bruise somewhere. He’s had no fighting training and as such can’t hold up against most other pirates, which is why he’s always needed to pay Croe off for her protection.
Russell is a compulsive gambler. This is where most of the money he steals or makes through scamming goes, and also constitutes a significant amount of the trouble he gets himself into.
There’s a sense of silliness about Russell. He’d make a good children’s entertainer. He likes dressing up, putting on silly accents, swaggering about and imitating people. He has almost no sense of shame or embarrassment and is up for just about anything. At school, he’d’ve been the class clown.
Backstory: Russ is an outlaw, but more of a con-man than a pirate. He’s a sweet-talker who’ll scam anyone out of their money, pirate or legal citizen. Like his familiar, he’s only really interested in stealing things which he thinks are pretty/sparkly - he tends to prefer trading in jewels to buying things with money - and he doesn’t get involved in ‘big’ crimes. Since he isn’t much of a fighter, Russ has always sought out the biggest, baddest pirate and paid them off in exchange for protection. Until her recent capture, this was Croe. Croe’s capture has left Russ in a spot of bother, since he’s annoyed most of the other pirates and isn’t really welcome in most of their inter-pirate meetings.

Xo is shy and doesn’t like speaking when there are other people around. She dislikes crowds and enjoys life best when it’s just her and Russ. She can startle and bolt, like a horse, and tends to shy away from the first sign of trouble. Russ has often called her a ‘useless dragon’, because she’s not remotely terrifying and is, in fact, more scared of other pirates than they are of her. When it’s just her and Russ, she exhibits a playful and silly side which is never shown to other people.
Like Russ, Xo is obsessed with anything shiny/sparkly and hoards whatever she can. Her biggest ambition in life is to fill a cave with gold and then sit on it all day. She goes along with Russ’s gambling habits out of a somewhat naive hope that he can win more than they have, but it never quite works out that way.
