Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Her encounter with the silver King this winter had left its mark. They had tussled and amid snarls and a struggle for dominance she had submitted to his ministrations in the way any female wolf would during estrus. He had proven himself worthy and besides, her instincts clouded her judgement. It was only as the nights grew colder and then still warmer that the results festered and blossomed until her side was swollen and her temper heightened. At first she had felt a keen sense of self deprecation but then she merely grew not to care. It was decided that she would birth them near the borders of Iromar so that their father would come and she would give them to him whether he wanted them or not. Arace felt sure that his ego would demand the survival of his pups for didn't males tend to want heirs? No doubt hers would be strong and strapping. For a moment she felt a keen sense of possessiveness but decidedly put it away. Her life was not one for children and her mission had yet to be fulfilled.

So as the day dawned she drew closer to Iromar, sensing the arrival of her pups would be nigh. They came upon swift seizures and contractions and she paced the banks of the Alpos, splashing in a few times as her survival instincts demanded she be ready in case another came along to interfere. They took a long time coming and with considerable effort that by the time the sun reached its zenith she felt wholly drained and proceeded to plop on her side on the damp grass, eyes watching the river slide by.

Then, in quick succession, they came and she cleaned them. A boy and a girl. She presses them to her belly to drink from her and feels an ease in the moment, a relief, but it is overshadowed by a sense of emptiness and exhaustion she had never known.
