He WOULD make that rabbit his playmate, even if it took all day! After the female had showed him how to stand absolutely still until the rabbit came to him, he had been practicing the whole being still thing. It was so hard though! His tail kept getting away from him, wiggling all over the place and even though he crouched as low as he could and tried to look harmless, the rabbit would just sniff the air and go in another direction, in a hurry too! He just didn't get it but it was really starting to get on his nerves. Why didn't it just come up to him already?! It wasn't like he was forcing it or anything! After the twelfth times was a bust, Fen growled in frustration, sending all the rabbits off in a hurry so he could throw his temper tantrum in peace. Well, sort of. He pounced on the nearest leaf, ripping it to shreds with his teeth as he banged his overgrown paws on the ground and snarled his irritation to the world. Or rather, the immediate area. His tail curled over his spine and his hackles ruffled in agitation. How dare the rabbits not want to be his friend?! What wasn't there to like really? He was a great friend if he did say so himself.
Deciding he would try again later, Fen moved on to racing his own shadows in the fields. He didn't know what Xerxes or Tikal were up to but surely they were having less fun than him! He always made it a point to get as muddy as possible before he went home just so he could pounce on Xerxes the minute he came in the den. He got in trouble by mom every time but it was totally worth it to see the look of pure horror and shock on his brother's face when he got him all dirty. He made sure to bring something back for Tikal though, most of the time anyway. She was the quiet and lovable one and whether he liked it or not, she was his sister and he felt the need to protect her, but only her. Xerxes could step on a thorn for all he cared. He was happy to announce that he was in fact faster than his own shadow. He beat it every time! But after the third victory, that too grew stale. He glared at the rabbits from a distance, his lips curling in anguish. Maybe if he couldn't befriend them, he could EAT them!
He'd seen the hunters in the pack return with rabbits hanging from their jaws, limp and bloody. It was a part of life, right? A wolf had to eat. He would show them all what they get for not being his friend! He crouched low and prowled in close, his tail twitching behind him. When the closest rabbit lifted its head, he launched himself out of the grass, getting all but two feet away from the rabbit before he tripped over a fallen branch and face planted in the dirt. The rabbits scattered and he got up slowly, cursing under his breath as he shook the dust from his fur. Could this day get any worse?
