The Grotto

Disaster has struck!
Years ago, an earthquake broke open several entrances into a deep, winding series of subterranean systems. It was thought that deep below, underground rivers snaked their way below Moladion. Now, flooding in the Northern reaches of Moladion has proven this theory to be true.

The Grotto is almost entirely submerged. Many of the entrances are completely inaccessible, and those that are only extend a few hundred feet before ending in water. The lower entrances, however, act almost like a giant drain for Moladion. Water pours down into the Grotto's maw as powerful rapids and waterfalls, and large amounts of debris have build up throughout the area. It can be exceptionally dangerous to travel due to the risk of flash-flooding and dams suddenly breaking, but the Grotto does offer the most consistent access across the floodwaters because of those dams.

Return to Lunar Children

A moment of grace echoes into eternity

It weighs heavy on me the crimes that were committed under the guise of subterfuge. The scattered bones around me don't tell me much but I sense a violence unprecedented in this place. Whatever had killed this young pup was certainly not of a gentle nature nor a natural one. Likely her father hadn't given one iota of thought to the disappearance of another pup for I had ascertained he was prolific in the fathering of children. What was he planning before his demise? To take over the world one pup at a time? I am immediately inclined to feel disgust at their existence but also pity - they were not him but they carried him and that alone made me wary. I had been there when he struck down the night Empress - I alone had seen it with my own eyes and been cowed by his threats, consumed by cowardice. I would tell Pine when I returned. I had resolved to tell my secret and had shared it with another not long ago - Sleekwing.

It comforted me that I knew I never could've taken him on and won. I wasn't built to be a fighter and had even less skills than that. I was a tracker, an extraordinarily amazing one in my own terms, but I didn't want to be much else. I spy a head peering at me suspiciously and I feel a moment to worry niggling -t me. Bones scattered at my feet and me standing in the middle of a crime scene? I think I had reason to be worried.

Before I can come up with a suitable greeting without making myself look guilty - because I had done nothing! - he starts talking and I blink in surprise. "What are the odds," I say curiously, tilting my head, before sighing robustly. "I'm Jackdaw and I reckon you should come over here and have a look at this. Pine sent me on a mission to locate the kids of Aranck since apparently no one knows what has happened to them. Rather neglectful parents, eh?" I say on a dry tone, a bite in my words enough to let him know I didn't like what had happened.

When he gets closer I shuffle back and lift a paw to point at the scattered bones. So frail and tiny now. "I tracked this girl here but there was another scent too, I just lost it. Too much time and weather." I frown hard as I think up ways to further this investigation. I slide my gaze to him. "What's the name of the boy you talked about so I can tell Pine where he is? She wants to make sure they are all okay. His mate left a couple in Iromar when she fled." I say it with disdain in my voice - what female could call herself a mother and do such things?
