He hadn't really stopped to think what someone might be doing on the outskirts of the territory. He hadnt' stopped to think that maybe she didn't want to be disturbed. Though, of course that would be precisely the kind of wolf he would want to practice on anyway. He needed to learn secrets, to start trading in dirty deeds so that he could move up in this world. He wanted to be of importance, to be valuable because if he had something on someone, then they would be his puppet in a way and that sounded like the ultimate amusement. He saw all the kind souls all around him but really it seemed that you got further in life if you used other wolves to pull you up along the way. Maybe he would end up as a thief and learn how to riddle so others didn't know exactly who he wanted and maybe he would be a keeper of secrets, a spy of sorts. He felt that he could do anything, really, but he needed plenty of practice before that day came. Why not sneak up on a wolf who must be up to no good?
When he jumped out, she turned on him instantly, her eyes gazing intently like she could see right through him. At first he was a little intimidated cause hey, who said she could look at him like that? He was supposed to be the intense one! He was supposed to be the one interrogating her, not the other way around. He huffed and flicked his ears back, his tail giving a gentle swish as he eyed her right back. She wasn't baring her teeth at him but he immediately picked up on a sense of danger in the air, a tension that could be cracked at any moment. He had a sense that maybe she wasn't all there in her head or that she was possessive over something close by and felt that anyone could be a threat to it, even him. Well, maybe he was a threat then. He would live up to that because some day, he wanted to be a danger to anyone he set his eyes on. Why not start now?
She repeated the word back to him in a hiss, her moving to cover something but not before he caught a glimpse of the skeleton and decaying flesh that still covered some of it. It looked like an old body of some sort, either a pup or something else equally tiny in stature. Why was she protecting it? It certainly wasn't a fresh kill. He could smell it from here. His nose wrinkled as he caught another whiff. It's like it was burning the very hairs in his nostrils. He wasn't at all tricked by the tail sweeping between her legs. Surely she wasn't scared of an awkward yearling. Besides, that look in her eyes was enough to send a completely different message so he wasn't going to be lured into thinking he had the upper paw. He eyed her paw then back to her gaze, meeting it evenly and fighting the urge to look away.
"We both know what I'm talking about, don't we? Come on, you can trust me. Who would I tell? My parents? Not like they would believe me. Halcyon? He doesn't even really know I exist. I'm nothing to him, less than nothing. Maybe I can help. I'm small and easy to overlook. Use me."
His eyes let on some of that ambitious glow. This is what he lived for. He could learn her secrets while she taught him to be a weapon without even knowing she was teaching. She might already think he knows what he's doing or maybe she's not fooled at all. Either way, she must be at least a little lonely, out here digging all by herself. Surely he could do something to lift the burden off her shoulders.
