Now that the excitement of dancing with death had worn off, Maverick felt the his heart drop. Having gotten a taste of what it was like to feel /something/ made the crushing weight he bore upon his back feel all that heavier. He lie there limp for a short while, afraid to have any room or time to think, but too exhausted and pained to get up and continue. He had learned the hard way that when he fell idle, he slipped into a trance that sent him back to that day, and he was forced to live through it all over again. It was so real. So very real. But right now he found solace in concentrating on the pain, busying himself with a mental assessment of the damage. His wounds were minimal, heavy bruising and a few scrapes but overall, he felt fine otherwise. Physically, that is. Mentally, his tiny spark of life was gone too soon. He wasn't sure just what he wanted to feel, but he did recognize it was pathetic that he almost preferred how it felt to be drowning in a river than to be lying outside of it.

A tiny alarm went off in the wolf's brain as the sound of approaching footsteps reached his ears. With his luck, he had stumbled upon somebody's land and now they're here to tell him exactly why that was a bad idea. However, Maverick could hardly think to raise an ear to further assess, never mind bother to actually lift himself from the ground. It must be pathetic to see a big lump of sopping fur just laying on the ground. A grown wolf that couldn't swim, who would have guessed? But Mav's numb state of mind couldn't find the energy to care. His appearance meant nothing anymore. Who was he trying to impress? His days of trying to keep up his looks had long since left him, evident in his matted, mud-coated fur and painfully skeletal stature.

As the stranger's pace quickened, Maverick's heart followed suit. His eyes were shut, hoping that maybe if he just seemed unconscious whomever it was would simply dismiss him all together. He held his breath, waiting painfully long seconds that felt like minutes for something to happen. A million scenarios played out in his head as he waited. Too focused on thinking up what /might/ happen, Maverick was laughed off guard by the sudden contact the femme had made with his head and he let out a sharp yelp as he flipped over. He was on his paws in a matter of seconds, but unfortunately his legs remained weak from his river struggle and the momentum of his flip tossed him back onto his back. The brute yelped once again, but this time didn't try to lift himself again. Instead, his dull green orbs looked over the odd duo while his brain processed what just happened. He hadn't had actual physical contact with another living being since... He shook his head and looked up at the female.

"I'm sorry..." he sputtered, his voice deep and raspy from lack of use. His eyes went in and out of focus as he tried to keep from zoning out and getting lost in his memories. Instead, he took in the sight before him. They were beautiful, in a hauntingly nightmarish sort of way. Her pristine white coat contrasted his own, and with the sun reflecting off it was almost painful to look at her. It was strange, taking time to see something, somebody in focus. His eyes lingered on each detail, every fleck of red as his eyes ascended the femme. It was not a look of greed, nor of lust, but one of pure interest and something similar to awe. Being in isolation for so long... it was as though he was seeing for the first time. Finally, he trained his gaze on her eyes, red in a way he had never seen before. They were mesmerizing in the way they glimmered in the light. "I uh..." Maverick struggled to recall the words he was looking for. It had been so long since he introduced himself to somebody, his etiquette was definitely rusty. Not to mention, the pair's intentions were still a mystery. She certainly didn't look as though she was seeking to inflict harm, but he knew better than to trust appearances. "I- uh, my name is Maverick," he glanced at Mishka then back up to the femme. "I will be on my way, I do apologize for intrud–" Another yelp slipped his maw as he tried to push himself up. A sharp, crippling pain shot up his spine and he immediately dropped himself back down, causing another sharp pain to shoot up his hind leg. So much for 'just a few bruises'. "Er, I uh, seem to have gotten myself in a bit of a predicament... but... I..." his heart picked up as he searched for a plan. "I mean... if you leave me, I will be gone by sunrise."
