lose your faith in me

She doesn’t flinch at the memories. They belong to her, have lived inside her long enough that she can accept them. They were both terrible and dreamlike. She is taken through the gentle moments between them and the rough times just the same. When her mind switches gears to Cash there is only a fleeting sting in her chest, then the notion of her children – she thinks this must be what going crazy feels like. Being tossed around in your own mind. It’s the image of the weird seahorse that makes her stagger for a minute but she tries not to let it consume her because her mind is a deadly place to be.

All these memories she carried with her. Each feeling was lodged inside her and she wished they weren’t there. It would be so much easier if she could forget.

But then he’s pulling away from her. No, not pulling, he’s running. Frantic to get far away from her and she watches his with wide, bewildered eyes. Her blood spills from his mouth onto the ground. Echidna touches the wound on her shoulder and she is quick to change her position to something less vulnerable.

She’d been close to the point of no return but now, all she felt was cold. The way he looks at her makes her skin crawl. She wraps her arms around herself.

“I didn’t mean to upset you,” Echidna says and keeps her eyes on the ground. What other answer was there? He realized what was happening and he stopped it, he didn’t want her. There is a moment when she thinks he might leave entirely because she can see the deer-like quality in his eyes. She reaches for her tunic.

Echidna clutches the fabric in her hands and gets the courage to look at him. “I can leave, if you want me to.”
