Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

With spring in full swing, Alyse was discovering that this land, Moladion, was far more green than anything she had ever seen. From the far North, she was used to browns and whites and greys with a few stubborn green patches here or there. To be so utterly surrounded by such life and wonder was almost overwhelming. Picking her way through the forest, somewhat oblivious to packlands and territories, Alyse worked her way west until she found a river that seemed to originate from a mountain.
For several long moment, Alyse stared at the snowy peaks, her lips curled into a smile. The land here was so vast and varied. She’d discovered woodlands and valleys and now mountains. This place was magical and despite her near constant hunger, the princess doubted she’d ever consider going back to her home. She was living the life she’d always dreamed of; freedom and adventure, excitement and thrills. Nothing back home could compare to this; certainly not a lifetime of being a pretty little mate to her intended.
”He’ll find someone else, someone he could love. I’m convinced that we were far too different to ever find love; it would only ever be about duty.” As she walked along the river, away from the mountains, Alyse shook her head. ”I want more than that. I want love and adventure and excitement. Not...fondness and duty and boredom.” Truly the thought of having to spend the rest of her life as nothing more than a pretty accessory that popped out pups was a bit disconcerting.
Putting her narrowly avoided fate out of her mind, Alyse continued down river, bouncing along on muddied feet and completely heedless of the fact that she looked a sad shadow of the beauty she had once been. Her pristine white fur had been yellowed and greyed in places, matted in others. Her chest and belly were splattered with mud and her little golden toes were hidden by dirt and mud. Truth be told, she didn’t particularly care at the moment. Perhaps once she’d gotten a better feel for the land, she’d clean up a bit, but for now she was more concerned with staying alive and exploring.
As it would happen, as she rounded a bend in the swift river, Alyse came upon another wolf. Another woman, perhaps older than she was, but petite. The other wolf was sitting there, watching something so Alyse stopped and watched as well. There was a strange creature that shone in the light, flopping around on the ground. Looking back at the wolf, Alyse saw that her face was wet, dripping water, then looked back at the bizarre, glistening creature as it seemed to gasp for air. Her brain worked to put the pieces together, but she had no context, really.
When the creature finally stopped flopping, Alyse watched as the other wolf paused briefly then ripped open its flesh. Her stomach cramped and growled as she thought of the last meal she’d had. She’d more or less stumbled across an injured marmot. Likely a loose rock had fallen on its head. But that was several days before. Still, she’d never seen a creature like that be consumed before. Curious, she moved closer, gold eyes bright. ”Excuse me, what is that?”
