WE'RE SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING MORE

Eurig dove into his Poppins bag, sifting through all the treasures that clanked and clacked together. It took a few moments of thoughtful deliberation before an “ah-HA slipped his lips. He pulled out several gems and cupped them together in his hands and held them out for Xebyni to exam, grinning from ear to ear. All of them were still raw and uncut and dusted with earth. Each ranging from the size of a bottle cap to the size of a post it notes. He plucked one from the group, holding it between his pointer finger and thumb slowly tilting it back and forth letting the natural sunlight reflect off of it. “Mmm.” He whispered, while staring at the stone. He tilted his body towards Xeb and brushed his shoulder against hers. Heightening the anticipation of what he was going to say about it next.

The stone was a deep shade of blue, the type you’d see in artic waters. As the sun glistened through the stone, it’s light reflecting the blue on the ground in skewed patchwork. A shockwave of euphoria that he always got when he found something good ran through him, causing him to shutter. “This!” He stated proudly, handing it off to his friend to examine herself. “This one is called Tanzanite, it’s not super rare or anything but it isn’t easy to find either.” He watched as Xeb examined it for herself, surely she’d see the beauty in it as he did. But he had backups just in case, the cool and solid masses pressed inside his palm were a reminder. “You can use it for your bows, I can cut them into small pieces.” His golden eyes looked up a sly smile spread across his lips. “Or…” He held out his own hand now, his fingers littered and lined with an array of assorted jewelry he had made, none perfect but each had been thought out very carefully. And with practice, he’d only get better. He hoped one day he’d become good enough to open his very own shop! “I can finally make you something special, a ring, a necklace, a bracelet. You name it.

He waited, knowing it would be an exciting thing for Xeb to process, and it might take a little bit of time for her to decide.

Or not.

Aneira was pouting; she didn’t have quite the elaborate plan that Eurig had. And even as her friend cooed to her telling her how much she missed her. Aneira knew she had lost. Even as Xeb peered at the stone she’d stick her tongue out at Eurig, who annoyingly and frustratingly hadn’t noticed she had done it once. She rolled her large golden eyes, shook her head, and lay down to groom herself. That was, until Xeb held the bows behind her back and had them guess numbers. Eurig was just about to tell her when Aneira jumped to her feet the word “One” echoing through the meadow. She didn’t bother this time turning to Eurig, she knew he was now pouting, since one was his favorite number.

Eurig sighed heavily, “I guess I’ll take two and that leave three for Ruby.” He turned to his ostrich friend and blinked. She wasn’t where she had been just moments ago. Panic set in Eurig, as this happened a lot. Ruby tended to disappear for whatever reason. Jumping to his feet he felt his heart thrumping in his chest, he was just about to ask Xeb if she’d help him but stifled a laugh instead.

Behind Xebyni, Ruby had been attempting to carefully pluck the bows from her hands. Catching sight of all three of them, he knew he didn’t care which one he got. All three were absolutely perfect.

He shook his head and threw his hands up. “I guess Ruby goes first.” He sat back down, nearly breathless from belly cramping laughter. “Let Aneira go next, I’ll take whatever’s left.
