River, thank you for existing

The sun blazing down on Emerie's fur was far from welcome. She was being smothered by the heat, trapped by her own fur that had helped her so much in winter. Its black hue only helps it draw in more warmth, pushing Emerie along the path to an overheated, miserable mess. Actually, she was pretty sure she'd already reached that landmark. How nice.

The sight of the river would have drawn a cry of joy from Emerie's ink-black muzzle, had she not been too tired to do so. She broke into an awkward half-run, half-stumble, practically collapsing into the sweet, cool relief of the water. Her muzzle followed the rest of her body, gulping down the sweet, wonderful water, amber eyes closing in appreciation. Dimly, she registered a question, but chose not to respond as a second voice chimed in.

Slowly, she lifted her head, droplets falling from her nose. Equally slowly, her eyelids crept back, and an image of a pup and a rainbow wolf further upstream snapped into focus. Her first thought - she's stunning. The second - I look ridiculous. Her black fur was soaked with water still dripping down back into the inlet. After a moment of hesitation, Emerie decided that she couldn't care less, and waded upstream to meet the two wolves. The current here was gentler than that of the main river, which made things easier. Good, because she didn't want to bother getting out of the water to walk over. "Hi. I'm Emerie," she introduced. "And you...?"
