The Grotto

Disaster has struck!
Years ago, an earthquake broke open several entrances into a deep, winding series of subterranean systems. It was thought that deep below, underground rivers snaked their way below Moladion. Now, flooding in the Northern reaches of Moladion has proven this theory to be true.

The Grotto is almost entirely submerged. Many of the entrances are completely inaccessible, and those that are only extend a few hundred feet before ending in water. The lower entrances, however, act almost like a giant drain for Moladion. Water pours down into the Grotto's maw as powerful rapids and waterfalls, and large amounts of debris have build up throughout the area. It can be exceptionally dangerous to travel due to the risk of flash-flooding and dams suddenly breaking, but the Grotto does offer the most consistent access across the floodwaters because of those dams.

Note:The Grotto will return to normal once 25 posts have been completed (or at Staff discretion). During this time, new threads will receive a 'Surprise','Disaster', and prizes.

He heard her well before he saw her. His hearing had only gotten more keen if anything thanks to all his times in the dark of the Grotto. With seeing reduced, his other senses had heightened, though even his vision in the dark was getting better. His pupils pretty much stayed dilated though it made it more uncomfortable when he did decide to go out into the sun. It was irony that he called out for a rat when really, he felt like the rodent. With his tiny slender form and his peppered wispy coat, he was like a slightly larger rabbit. He used to think that would make him a good thief, but now he wasn't so sure that's even what he wanted to do anymore. What else was there? He could tell someone was coming. He could hear her paws gliding across the cold cavern floor. He could hear the drips of saliva hit the rocks, even hear the whisper lik of her lips. He kept himself curled around his brother's skull, protecting it as he faced the intruder. He had known someone was watching him as he wandered around the Grotto and sometimes even out into the other freelands. He just didn't care enough to investigate. His mind sent him on random wanderings that always drew him back here into the darkness.

The snap of jaws closing had made him jump to curl around Xerxes' skull. He wouldn't let her take his last piece of family. She asked if it mattered and he studied her for a moment before he shook his head, ears flattening to his skull. "No, it doesn't." His voice was so soft, almost a whisper, but still slightly hissed through his teeth. It was right with lack of use, his tail twitching behind him as he eyed the female. From what he could see in the darkness, her coat was just white. It almost reflected what little light could get into the Grotto. One would think most white wolves were good and pure, but she acted anything but. Her eyes glowed with eagerness as she stared at him like he was a juicy steak. His muscles shivered in anticipation, though he knew with the size difference, he couldn't take her on in a full-on fight. He was never built for fighting, but he was fast and agile. She dared to come even closer and his lips curled back, revealing his snaggled fangs. He growled deep in his throat, even snapping the air to warn her back as his tail flicked almost gently across the forehead of the skull. No, he wouldn't let her touch him.

The way she faced him on the stone was taunting and he knew she was trying to draw him out but he wouldn't leave Xerxes, not by choice. She told him that he was the one hiding and his ears pricked in response. He tilted his head. "Hiding? No. Listening. Finding the way when one was lost. I am searching for something hidden, but no, I am right here." He straightened up, watching her, though one ear twitched. He could see the challenge in her stance but he wouldn't call her bluff by attacking first. His back paw shifted back to keep contact with the front of the skull. Xerxes was watching. He would shake his head in disgust if he could see Fen now. The female's tail curled over her back and she growled, everything screaming hostility at him, but still, Fen held his ground, though he lowered his stance and widened his legs, making it easier for him to dodge if she lunged. He kept himself positioned slightly over Xerxes' skull, as if he were protecting a pup. He growled right back. "He did not invite you here. Who are you to dare take his claim on me? You are not blood." He knew he probably made no sense. Bitterness dripped from his words as he practically growled the words at her.
