Her words and friendly nature allowed relief to nestle in near his rib cage and open up his lungs so that breathing came much easier. When he exhaled, he felt his muscles uncoil too. A soft smile appeared slowly along his maw and was well in place by the time she approached. “I’m glad to hear that.” He said so truthfully that he also did not hide the exhaustion in his voice and in his bones.
There was something about this stranger that didn’t make her seem like a stranger at all and he liked that. It was nice, for a change, to meet somebody so open instead of guarded. Someone who was more concerned about helping a brute that had crawled out of the sea than finding out if he was trustworthy first. He hadn’t known a wolf like her in a long time. “Injured?” Arkin asked, glancing down automatically to survey himself. “I don’t think so. Though I do look to be in a sorry state, don’t I?” This he finished with a chuckle. He was sure he’d never looked this ridiculous- his coat dried stiffly in patches of swirls and tufts, in some places littered with sand and caked in mud. “I’m no healer, but I think I might get along alright with some rest. And a bath.”
Arkin smiled again, more genuinely like himself. The warmth in her welcome made it easy to put away his stranger-meeting-mask. “My name is Arkin.” He said with something like pride and a comradely wave of his tail. "Might I know yours? And what it is that you call this place?”
