Zjeena isn't Liland's mare, and she hasn't been his mare since he lost her to Rougaru all those years ago. Zjeena didn't have to come back to him. She didn't have to agree to breed with him again. She didn't have to leave Nattergal and Havelle behind in the Bay when she did. Zjeena did all of this because she wanted so badly to believe in Liland. She thought maybe Liland would come around, that he would treat her with the same kindness he once showed her when they first met on the Crossing, but it's clear to Zjeena now that she was only ever being used, and Liland will continue to use her for as long as she lets him.
The call falls on Zjeena's sensitive ears and her stomach lurches. She knew he would come. He always does. There is a strong desire to remain wrapped safely in the shadows of the Jungle and ignore his call, but Zjeena knows that isn't an option. She has to talk to Liland.
Her reluctance is apparent as she steps out onto the beach. The warm light of day reflects off a healthy coat. Her mane and tail hang in thick silken falls about her neck and hocks. Her flanks well, heavy with child and good nutrition. She is a picture of beauty save for her expression. Zjeena's ears are flat under her mane, and her nostrils wrinkle in distaste. She trudges through the sands with heavy, irritated strides. Her pregnant belly swings to and fro, the pendulum on a very large, and angry clock. "What are you doing here?" she barks, from a position several lengths away.
Liland lost the battle. He lost this battle, just as he lost the very first battle, but this time will be different. Liland comes upon the shores of Paradise, calling out, looking to cut a deal. This is what he does. He tries to bargain with chips he doesn't have. Zjeena fell for it the first time. She let Liland barter with her freedom, currency that wasn't his to barter with in the first place. But she won't fall for it again. Zjeena is not Liland's mare. Liland lost any claim to her again on the battlefield, just as he lot his claim to any of his other mares. This is life, and these are the rule. Zjeena and Rougaru owe Liland nothing.
