Ted, the VC for Teddy still had to be approved by the Queen as our Head of State and the medal was handed over to the Australian Ambassador by the Royal Navy in Britain. Despite what you say that it is wholly Australian, I believe that is not the case as it is still supplied by the UK. That said, the VC for Australia remains essentially an Imperial award. I would like to see Australia shelve the VC and develop its own highest military honour, maybe much like the USA Congressional Medal of Honour but it does not have to mirror that award. I mean absolutely no disrespect to our 101 awardees of the VC and the VC for Australia but Australians deserve to be recognised, awarded and decorated solely by and for Australians. It's a bit rude when we don't even manufacture all of our own medals and the VC is the only one not made in Australia. If and when Australia becomes a Republic, there will be no place for what remains essentially an Imperial award.
